Warm Spring Days, Hot Vegas Nights
What’s up Degens?
Xzibit – Been A Long Time (classic beat, and Nate Dogg on the vocals is awesome obv)
Atmosphere – The Bass And The Movement (super sick flow!)
Atmosphere – Part for the Fight To Write
I’m not sure how long it’s been since I made a post, but I’ll just recap a few interesting things that’ve happened in the last couple of weeks…
Last weekend was another pretty ridiculous weekend here in LV. One of my friends out here wanted to do his 24th birthday in style, so he got a table and bottle service at the new club at City Center called Haze. All I can really say is OMFG that was the best party I’ve ever been to. I expected it to be really sick, but even by Vegas standards it blew my mind. I haven’t been to XS yet, but it’d be quite a feat to top the environment that they’ve created over there. The DJ was fantastic, the girl to guy ratio was probably 2/1, and everything was just basically perfect.
We got hooked up big time with our table location too. It’s hard to describe where it was if you haven’t been there, but in short our table overlooked the entire club right above the dance floor and middle stage (stripper poles, dancers, and in general total craziness if you can picture it). So here’s kind of how the night went..
As we walked in, all of us were kind of excited because we’d never been there before. As if things weren’t already great enough, our table was literally sat in between two tables of 15 sorority girls from Fresno that were celebrating their 22nd birthday’s. The table to our direct left was Avril Lavigne and some of her friends, so our spot was seriously perfect.
I said in a previous entry that I have an acquired skill of attracting random trouts, and this night was no different. Before long, a girl from across the table area comes over and asks me what my name is. I tell her John obv, and she says “you’re pretty sexy, take off your shirt Johnâ€. I’m like umm… You’re going to have to take it off for me! So naturally she lunges at me, unbuttons my shirt, throws it at her friend, and starts licking my nipples, followed by a makeout session. A few minutes went by before security made me put it back on, but it was still good for a story. Yep, Vegas is a boring place that nobody likes to go to…
After tons of dancing and way too many drinks, I eventually got carried out of Haze because I couldn’t stand up. Definitely the most drunk I’ve been in well over a year, and it reminded me why it’s so important to eat something before you do any kind of moderate to heavy drinking. Apparently I was falling down a bunch and had to be helped back to my apartment. If you want to see good ’ol KasinoKrime in a drunken stooper, check out the video I posted at the top of my facebook page.
In poker news, I’ve been playing a reasonable amount, which is funny because I didn’t think I was going to play very much this month, but sometimes if you have the urge to play you just kind of have to feed it. I’ve had a few bad sessions where my play dropped, but overall the last four sessions I’ve put in I’ve actually felt like I was consistently playing my A game for the first time in a loooong time, which feels good. I’ve been working with my neighbor Chance on my game, and I think it’s helping a lot. I think I have more of a theoretical foundation than he does, but he’s great at playing past the flop and he’s also done a lot of work on his bet sizing, so we’ve definitely taught each other some really useful skills. It’s amazing how gaining a different perspective by watching someone else play can help your game, so I feel privileged to be able to watch someone like him play.
Here’s some of the hands where I won or lost a stack. Winners first imo.
First one is pretty standard, and if you guys like money I suggest playing the shallow tables, particularly on the weekends. From what I’ve seen they seem pretty soft, but please keep the secret to yourselves :)

I’m interested to see what others think of my line here. MP is big fish, BTN is big fish as well, and he has a really nitty 3b’ing range, especially since I opened UTG he should basically only be 3b’ing AA** here. I call PF for implied odds, and even though my relative position is bad it’s worth it to stay in because of the other fish as well. On the flop I decide to lead because I think he only raises me with the straight or some draw that has me dominated, so by picking the size I did, I get him to basically turn his hand faceup, and it allows me to rep basically whatever I want on later streets since anything reasonable should try to protect for the most part. The turn is interesting, mostly because we played a similar pot earlier where he opened the BTN and I 3b out of the SB with KQJ8ss, flop is 884ss, turn K, and I took a similar line but he folded the turn. When he peels the turn I don’t think it’s the nut flush always, but I’m not sure what the best river line is, I’m kind of torn. What do y’all think? I think for the most part since he should have a flush here, but if his btn 3b’ing range is so narrow the NF is a big piece of it, so it’s kind of a close spot. hhmmmm

I like my line here. Flatting is fine pre because villain is 23/16’ish, we’re already HU, and I think I can play profitably against him OOP given my reads and the stack sizes. I decide to c/r less than pot for a few reasons. I don’t mind widening his calling range, and actually that’s the intention. c/r’ing pot might push out worse fd’s and you can get him attached to the hand, and many times he’ll just call the c/r and fold the turn so you get more dead money that way as well.

I go back and forth on this one. It looks like a spew on the surface, but this guy is seriously going off. He’s only been at the table for 20 hands, but he’s 3b 12 of them. Two hands previous we played a hand where we ran it for stacks but chopped because we ran it twice, but I got it in amazing against him. Only thing that was notable in the hand was that he flatted my open out of the SB with KcQc3s2s, so he’s obviously getting in there. My thinking at the time was that I thought I was ahead of his getting it in range, and also my KK** doesn’t have a ton of post-flop playability, but looking back on the hand I think it has enough to where I can just call and play with him post-flop. There’s no reason to spew a stack here imo, and this highlights one of my biggest leaks which is definitely spewing stacks in close spots like this where I end up being wrong.

that one KJ3A hand where you turn the flush I really like your line. I assume you're jamming the river because you think he will call with a worse flush given that he is likely to jam the turn with the nut flush?
What's your reasoning behind the jams with the A5KA and 8T7Q hands? Does not compute because I would expect you to bet/fold both of those. I must be doing it wrong :(
Anyway definitely going to have to check out Haze next time in Vegas now...

What's up LS?
Thanks for checking out the blog. Yep, your assumptions about the AKJ3 hand are right! I don't think I can b/f the AAK5 hand because it's a 4b pot, and there's a ton of combo draws that he can c/r with that I have enough equity against to stack off. QT87 hand is an easy b/c for similar reasons because it's a 3b pot, and he can be c/r with draws I have enough equity against to get it in. Please check out Haze next time you're here, it's sick!

Cool. I think I originally didn't realize the AAK5 hand was 4b pre (I thought it was just 3b). Makes sense and I agree to get it in. As for the QT87 hand...I guess I learned something new! I would have expected you to be kind of in bad shape against a large range of hands but it turns out you're a slight favorite against pair+fd and only a slight dog to an overpair+fd. I guess unlucky he flopped bottom set in a 3b pot. Thanks for the clarification!

What's up ceegee? Thanks for checking out the blog, when're you heading out to LV? In regards to how much it costs to go out, it honestly just depends on where you go and who you're with. If you get a table, most clubs will waive your cover as long as you buy two bottles up front (depending on the alcohol you get, that's anywhere from 300-500 bucks per bottle). In the past I've had some very expensive nights, but since I moved here I've been fortunate enough to get hooked up pretty well, so many times I don't pay anything, but sometimes I'll pay like 100 or 200 bucks (depends who I'm with). Shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do for you and your friends when you come out.

On hand 7, what do you do if the turn is a blank? a queen? ten?
on hand 4, I like the small donk. What's your reasoning? Does it give you a cheap turn as he can't really raise with anything that's in his range except nut flush draw?
KasinoKrime posted on April 18, 2010 at 22:31 PM
On #7, I continue to bet/get it in on the cards you said. Checking would be a nightmare because I don't want him to realize his equity, and there's too much money to give up on now so I'd just bet and get it in on the turn. If I didn't make my hand on the turn I probably would've bet bigger, but so it goes.
The second hand my reasoning was to get him to define his hand and to build a pot on later streets. And ya, what you said about getting a cheap turn is true as well.
