F*ck It, I Call!

What’s Up Degens?

I can’t believe I’ve neglected my recommendations for this band for this long.. It must’ve just slipped my mind, but honestly, Slightly Stoopid (interesting name, I know) is one of the sickest bands you’ve ever heard of. Don’t hate, just download these songs and tell me what you think.. If you don’t like it, well I don’t think we can be friends anymore.

Slightly Stoopid – Everything You Need
Slightly Stoopid – Closer To The Sun
Slightly Stoopid – This Joint
Slightly Stoopid – Digital
Slightly Stoopid – Open Road

I’ll save the rest for next time, but those should be enough to satisfy until I blog next time.

The last ten days or so have been pretty awesome with IRL stuff. My shoulder got a lot better, so I decided to start lifting and playing some Badminton again. I know I don’t get 1000000 blog views like some of the studly pros out there, but I want to issue a challenge for this summer when everyone comes out to Vegas for the WSOP. I’ll bet up to $10k that nobody could beat me in a degen triathlon of HUPLO, Badminton, and Golf. If you’re interested, PM me here. I think I’m going to post something about it on 2p2, but I’d love to get in there with some other Badminton players and Golfers! Plus it’d be a sweet prop bet to look forward too, and the blogging material would be even better!

Everything on the poker front has been going ok. I made a DC vid last week where one of my old students rocked me for like $750 playing HU, but that’s to be expected because he’s a pretty sick player. I’ve never made a video of myself playing HU, so it was a really great experience going back and seeing all of the mistakes I was making. I think I played ok the first half, but the second half of the video I end up falling apart and making some tilt-induced plays, which obviously sucks but I’m having a good time putting in some HU volume and improving my play. I think I lost every big pot we played, except for one that didn’t even get show in the video, but I’m going to post it here real quick since I think it’s a great hand for discussion.

Everything before the turn is standard, but the rest of the hand definitely isn’t. The turn is interesting because I think my standard play would be to raise it up in fear of making a mistake on the river and being put to a tough decision if he continues to bet. But the board is dry enough to where it’s difficult for him to have any draws besides only spades, which if he has only spades I’m doing fine against, unless he has K*** with spades, or AA** with spades, then I’m not doing incredible, but against everything else my equity is very good. I figured I can under-rep my hand on the river, and get him to value bet thinner than he normally would, and also if it bricks I can get paid more by making him c/c thinking I had a draw. I picked 75 on the river because it either forces him to call me wider with KA** type hands, or AA** hands, and perhaps even making a call with T*** type hands. Obviously against aggressive players, you can’t make bets like this unless you’re willing to call if he ships, which is a risk I’m willing to take on boards of this texture. So overall, betting small worked well for me in this situation because it induced a bluff, but betting sizes like these are also good against passive players as well because they’ll make ridiculous call downs.

The next week or so is going to be spent studying a bunch of new poker material that I need to catch up on. Today I got the FINALIZED copy of Tom Chambers (LearnedFromTV 2p2, www.plotheory.com) Advanced PLO Theory ebook, so I’ll probably have my nose in that for the next couple of days. He’s sent out a few other editions, but just from taking a quick glance it appears that he added a lot, and a few of the chapters I haven’t even touched so it’ll be sweet to finally go through it and take in some new stuff. I’ve been looking forward to this for the last six months, so I’m super excited to get down and dirtyyy on it.

I was having a conversation with my friend Kai (ISPEWCHIPS on FTP, Team Baluga guy), and he was telling me about an interesting concept that he and a friend were talking about the other day. The synopsis of it is basically centered around how whenever you say “fuck it” before you do anything, it’s probably a bad idea. Examples:

You’re wasted but don’t want to sleep on a couch or the floor – “Fuck it, I’m driving”

You don’t have a rubber but you really want to get laid – “Fuck it, I’m horny”

You hold 7468 on a 774KJ board, and the most passive player in the world raises 2.5x over you – “Fuck it, I call”

Basically what he was saying is that anytime you say “fuck it” before you do something, it turns out negatively or was probably a bad idea in the first place. I tend to agree, I think, but it’s applicability to poker is what I’m still on the fence about. I’ve had several “fuck it I call’s” in my day, but some of them have definitely turned good results. That’s probably selective memory though, because I’d have to say my biggest leak is not folding the river. Here’s a great example.

Definitely should’ve led the flop, but I was getting my tales set up and wasn’t really paying attention. Even though any hand that beats me doesn’t make sense (nor does JJJ77), this is an easy fold against any random opponent, but particularly against this fishy ass dude. I saw in another thread how someone takes their hand off of the mouse before making a call, and I think this is something I need to start doing. I make way too many calls like this that cost me a ton of money; overall I just need to pay attention more. If I saw a student doing this, I would tell him it’s the easiest fold in history, but for some reason I have a difficult time making the folds myself. So it goes, live and learn!

I’ve actually started a collection of all the hands I play atrociously. Hopefully it’ll remind me of the common mistakes I’m making, and give me some incentive to improve by seeing all the money I’m leaving on the tables.

Ok, onto the hands. I did some experimenting with the new shallow tables over the weekend, and I kind of liked it. Decisions are pretty clear cut, and fish seem to really like it. I’ll probably frequent them a decent amount from now on.

I’ll do winners first because they’re more exciting, hahaha.

This one is sorta interesting. He’s opening a ton, and sometimes I’d 3b this but decided to flat because he’s opening very wide and has a high cb percentage, so I’ll be able to c/r’ a ton of combo draws on the flop, in addition to just completely bluffing other boards. It’s kind of an awkward flop, and while c/c’ing isn’t really a staple of my game, a situation where I will do it from time to time is here. I think his river line is ok, I just happened to have a hand. If we were deeper though I think it’d be a lot more effective, and he’s also a very big loser in these games so I’m not going to be making a ton of folds to him.

I’m happy with my turn line here. He probably calls anyway, but I figured he never has an Ace because he would’ve jammed the flop, so what’s left is 8*** and other random draws that I want him to stick in on the turn for me just in case. Kinda juicy I think.

In the AhQhJs5s hand where you flop top two and get check-raised. What's you reasoning to 3bet the flop? Nice hands!

Hahah, wtf... It cut off my post early! There's actually a ton more hands I posted but for some reason they didn't get put up.. Oh well.

Hi Kaido, thanks for checking out the blog. I decided to 3b the flop mainly because I wasn't worried about him having a set (not many 22**, 55** or JJ** hands in a limping range, plus I have blockers), thought he could potentially make a bad fold with a hand like he had, or fold top two or something. And it's not like my hand is monstrous anyway, so I just want to get the money in on the flop and not make a mistake on the turn.

I've been making these calls a lot lately. It's like "are you serious? do you really have the exact hand you are repping right now? fuck it, I call!" not a good idea for sure. Also I was going to say something about those Shallow tables. Fish for sure love them and it's not like the Cap where the fish can only get in 40bbs, here they can run up a stack and then you can really take advantage of them. Also the decisions become incredibly straight forward. Some really cool hands here.
