X-Post from a friend's blog #2! I hate it here - #11 - “You’d best call Kenny Loggins…because you’re in the Daaaanger Zoooone”, or why Archer is one of the best shows of the past 2 years

I do some writing on a friend's entertainment blog, thought I'd cross-post - hope you like it, if you do, check out the full blog at http://countsofthenetherworld.tumblr.com/

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TV is infested with animated comedies. On any given day it’s possible to catch, in sequence, The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, American Dad, and more. Or it is, if you don’t mind getting bedsores from remaining on the sofa: personally I don’t mind, as it just adds to my existing sores below the waist. Generally the big three have been The Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy. Gun to my head I’d place pre-jumping the shark Simpsons slightly ahead of South Park, with Family Guy a very distant third.

Me…and Your Mother

Recently, however, I have acquired a new obsession, and its name is Archer…Sterling Archer. [And yes, there are fucking spoilers ahead, big ones with teeth]

From left to right? I guess…3, 5, 4, 2, 1?

Archer snuck onto our screens through FX (who brought us the apocalyptically violent testosterone enhancer that is Sons of Anarchy - watch it now). The show follows Sterling Archer, international super-spy and man of mystery. He works at ISIS, an international spy agency run by his mother, Mallory. His colleagues include:

  • his ex-girlfriend, and interracial porn enthusiast, fellow field agent Lana Kane;
  • company accountant and sex addict Cyril, whom Lana is now dating;
  • Pam, the gossipy HR officer;
  • Carol, a secretary with a choking fetish;
  • gay, formerly married, analyst Ray; and
  • mad scientist Krieger who owns a “rape van”.

So far,so Bond… on meth

Where things get interesting are in the characters’ (ridiculous) flaws, and their relationships to one another.

Archer is, to put it simply, a total dick, incompetent at anything other than being a field agent. He treats his elderly heroin-addicted butler Woodhouse as some sort of sub-human. At one point he threatens to grind sand into Woodhouse’s “dead eyes” if he finds any dog hairs in his apartment when he returns home….before telling Woodhouse to go buy some “coarse” sand.  He throws women’s clothes off his balcony to make them leave (a useful tip, actually). Archer also has an utterly bizarre relationship with his gin-soaked mother/boss Mallory, who codenamed him “Duchess”, after her favourite dog. With that said, the character is certainly not one-dimensional, and particularly in series 2 we see some excellent gags based around Archer’s slightly geeky obsessions - for instance his obsession with Burt Reynolds, and his excitement in spending most of an episode playing with ocelot named Babou.

The show is, however, in many ways an ensemble comedy. The supporting cast bring plenty to the table, with the voice actors delivering everything fantastically well, and some of the best moments taking place with the titular (anti?)hero off-screen. Generally the format seems to involve one or zero straight-men to the comedic characters. It must also be said that series 2 builds on each of the characters, and they become better used and more fleshed out with each passing episode, making the ensemble comedy moments even better as the show goes on.

My friends, family, and visitors often find me like this

One of the real strengths of the show is the writing. There’s a huge range of humour tucked away in the show. There are fairly obvious gags based around Archer’s cruelty to Woodhouse, or Cheryl’s weird fetishes, which work well. There are, however, also, some awesomely weird/slightly nerdy gags, such as Archer mixing up a furrier (sells furs) and a farrier (sells horseshoes), or demanding to know if someone’s against whaling because they are against “clean burning lamp oil”. There are also some pretty obscure easter eggs tucked away in the show:

  • a reference to Herman Melville’s short story Bartleby the Scrivener;
  • a reference to Bilbo Baggins’ coat of dwarven mithril;
  • a back tattoo of Lord Byron’s “The Destruction of Sennacherib.”

These little touches aren’t necessary to enjoy the show, but if and when you spot one you ‘get’ it adds another layer onto an already fantastic show.

Finally, it certainly doesn’t hurt that the show is the most quotable thing I’ve seen in, well, ever. A few examples should suffice:

  • “Your authority is not recognized in Fort Kick-ass.” - Krieger
  • “Immigrants! That’s all they do, you know. Just driving around listening to the raps and shooting all the jobs.” - Mallory
  • “Does Internet porn know you’re cheating on it?” - Archer
  • “Not many women could bring me to orgasm in front of my mother. I don’t think.” - Archer
  • “And I love that I have an erection that doesn’t involve homeless people.” - Krieger
  • “Oh, I’ll just yank his pants off, splash a lot of scotch and women’s underthings about, and then tell him he slipped and fell chasing a terrified Asian prostitute out onto the patio. It’s not the first time I’ve bashed his head in and had to cover my tracks. Happens three, four times a year.” - Woodhouse (on Archer)

Watch it now, and give this great show the attention it deserves.

X-Post: Game of Thrones? Game of PWNED!

A cross post from my other blog......if you like it please visit http://countsofthenetherworld.tumblr.com !!

Game of Thrones is the manliest series I've seen, at least since the twin punches to the balls that were Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Gods of the Arena.  My testosterone level has climbed to Commander Riker levels since watching this show.

Sean Bean's new office chair: ergonomic? SWORDONOMIC!
Mere words cannot describe how badass this show is, so here is a crudely drawn table, explaining exactly why it is so very manly:

Dogs aren't man's best friend: MS Paint and Excel are.

The series is based on George R. Martin's series of fantasy novels, "A Song of Ice and Fire". These follow the struggle to rule Westeros, a continent split into seven kingdoms, where summers can last for decades, but so can winters.

Series 1 so far appears to broadly correlate to book 1, entitled "Game of Thrones". The plot largely follows the Lord of Winterfell, Eddard Stark, as he investigates the murder of his mentor, John Arryn, while serving as Hand to the King, along with various parties plots to take the Iron Throne (the delightful sword-based office chair seen above).

The location switches between the capital of Westeros, known as King's Landing, the Wall, which protects the seven kingdoms from the threats lurking in the north, and across the sea, where Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen, the heirs to the deposed former King, set out to reclaim the Iron Throne. They do this with the help of some awesome barbarians called the Dothraki, led by Khal Drogo, portrayed by future Conan, Jason Momoa. Viserys, in effect trades his sister for Drogo's horde. This works pretty well for him, and worse...or possibly better for Daenerys:

Oh Jason Momoa, why not me? Why? TAKE IT FROM CONAN BITCH

The production values are fantastic. The landscapes are suitably epic, and the towns and equipment do for fantasy what Star Wars did for space: they made it look dirty and used. It works and it works well. The show looks fantastic, and it benefits from being gritty low fantasy rather than high fantasy: there's no call for huge over the top CGI monsters.

The other benefit is that the show doesn't rely on big set piece high fantasy scenes and battles. Instead you get exquisitely written, well crafted political intrigue combined with epic, apocalyptic violence. Kind of like The Wire but with more beheadings and sword-based murder. The dialogue is well crafted, and the episodes are well paced: I always seem to want to see the next episode immediately.

The casting is also generally well done. Sean Bean (aka Sharpe) as Eddard Stark is absolutely correct - but that's an easy casting as a taciturn northerner. Mark Addy escapes the hell of supermarket ads to play King Robert Baratheon. This works pretty well, as he plays a drunken party King who should probably never have been King, and he slips right into the role of a man who likes booze, bitches and battle. The rest of the cast, with the exception of Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo, who in fact IS an awesome barbarian, and Aiden Gillen (Mayor Carcetti) as Littlefinger are largely lesser known names. But this worked for The Wire, it worked for Mad Men and it works here. The characters have good dialogue to work with, and deliver it well, along with some suitably bawdy medieval type puns.

The real highlight of the individual performances though is Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister. He is EXACTLY how the book made me imagine him, and steals each and every episode as a foul mouthed, hooker frequenting, drunken dwarf, who might also be the smartest of the characters on the show, as well as the most amusing. He is fantastic.

All in all the show has been one of the highlights of my year, along with Gods of the Arena, Archer (series 2), and Community (series 2). Watch it or die, can you do any less!?

Crawling back to blogging

Hey chumps,

I have decided to return to blogging. In the wake of Black Friday (doesn't stop me playing, does eat more of my fish and make me move sites!) and withdrawing some money I have returned to playing regularly, grinding up a small amount I had left on Party. The plan is to grind micro/small stakes 6m NL until I have enough to play HU/PLO and then just bumhunt 6m to death. I decided to start writing again for two reasons. Firstly, I enjoy it (though you couldn't tell by my output!) and secondly, for some accountability as I grind. I plan to post some hands here each time I write, and crosspost with another blog I write on. So there will be poker content, and various things that get a laugh out of me on the internet/that are stolen off Reddit etc. I should have a ton of time to write and play as law school finishes in 2 weeks (wooooooo - as an aside, I'm also willing to answer any/all questions re law school in the UK).

I'll try and put up a big substantive post tomorrow or Thursday, but in the meantime, I've been helping out some friends with a blog covering tv/comics/books/film/music/humour. It's been a lot of fun so far and hopefully there are some fun pieces on the blog: though be warned - at the moment the formatting is strictly amateur hour, though we plan to remedy that! If anyone takes a look and has any suggestions as to content, formatting, or wants to write anything, let me know, that would be awesome.

The blog is called Counts of the Netherworld (bonus points if you spot the reference!), and it can be found at http://countsofthenetherworld.tumblr.com/

The facebook page can be found at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Counts-of-the-Netherworld/176741005718178

Right now it's all pretty ghetto but the content is pretty sweet, and if you could take a look, like the page, tell your friends etc, I'd be appreciative!

Long timey no writey

I meant to start updating more regularly, but events of the last 2 weeks have kind of sapped me of the time.

This does not, however, mean that I am busy. As per my last post, Bar school is a bit of a joke. A friend who did the same masters as me and myself were pulled aside after a teaching session and told that asking the tutors questions that were simply too hard for them to answer was making them uncomfortable, and to not do it anymore. Not for the benefit of the students, but rather for the staff. In somewhere that has just attained 'University' status in the UK intellectual curiosity or desire to learn is forbidden. LOL. Clearly Toto, we are not in Oxford any more. Luckily my indescribable outrage at this was quickly alleviated by us going to the pub and me rediscovering gin.

Gin

I have rediscovered that gin is fucking awesome.

I had forgotten how easy it is to slam (double figures) of gin + anything. It is both easy and delicious. At the moment I am torn between innocuous tasting Bombay Sapphire, and more tasteful but a bit weirder Tanqueray. Clearly further study is needed. I had also forgotten that I don't seem to get hung over drinking this, and get a relatively clean drunk when I remain jolly.

Myself and some friends have decided to adapt to our surplus of free time with the 'Mad Men' drinking strategy -  this is carefully outlined in the clip below:

In other news....

  1. I am now fully moved into my new flat and had a housewarming, it was pretty awesome. I later fell asleep on the sofa and one of my housemates had to stop a 'guest' who none of us seem to remember inviting attempting to put his penis into my mouth. Said housemate is now in my good books.
  2. Poker is still going well overall, but I have been struggling to put hands in, and stalled my BR growth a little with a few rough sessions. I think I have been playing tired and not game selecting well enough. That said, I am having a lot of success playing to a very small BI stoploss, and playing longer when I feel I am playing well and winning. Still, I'm now at just over 10.8k hands and just under 10 PTBB/100 (9.86 PTBB/100) playing plenty of regs, and including a bit of run bad at NL100 shots. So I can't complain. I think for the next week or so I'm going to try to put in 1-2 hours/day and game select much more heavily unless I feel very on top of things. Graph below- it's NL50 and NL100 HU.

Anyway that's about all from me. Someone comment or some shit.

Finally, The Rock has come back to....

I have decided to start writing again.

I stopped writing last year following a series of downswings and withdrawals that got really depressing. I withdrew a lot of money and used it for rent and living expenses and left a little online. After a lot not really happening I took a long break, and came back to poker, and after reading an old-ish 'The Well' by Jungleman was inspired to try HU properly. So now I am grinding HU, and have decided to start writing again!

Since I haven't posted since the dawn of time, my background (again):

I'm 22, did law at undergrad and masters (BCL) at Oxford, both turned out pretty well results-wise, and am currently at Bar school in London training to be a barrister (non-English people read: trial lawyer). Luckily I already have the job lined up so seems to be working out so far! I have just moved into London in the last week, living around the Shepherd's Bush area. So far London is amazing (at least for a yokel/hillbilly/bumpkin like me), really looking forward to having a relatively easy year here having some fun. Incidentally, the course so far is pretty light work, and someone in my group identified Amsterdam as a country. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions from that.

Poker-wise, I grinded up from 2nl to 200nl, and started on some shots at 400nl, all 6m, then ran 10k under EV at 50nl through 200nl, played reallllllllly badly, dropped a ton of money, and so I withdrew a bunch and left about 1k online. This sort of bounced around online, dwindling as I began to hate the game and not care, until I eventually took a look break, as I mentioned above. Now I'm back and have time to play/get good, and so far I am really enjoying HU a ton. I'm mostly playing 50nl HU though I have played a bit of 100nl HU since I've been back. Hopefully this time things will be more successful. This blog will hopefully chronicle my rise/fall through the various stakes, and some life stuff too, since poker alone simply isn't a great read.

Results so far, thoughts on HU:

User Uploaded Image

So far so good with HU. My WR across 50nl and 100nl is currently 18.63 PTBB/100 over this nothing sample that counts for precisely dick. Obviously I am running hot and obviously 18BB/100 is not sustainable long term. For now it is pretty though, and is certainly helping get my confidence in my game back. I am running pretty hot too, to the tune of 4-5BI or so, but even taking that into account I'm pretty happy with my results so far.

Current thoughts

  • I'm trying out a reasonably aggro BR strategy, since while being properly rolled is important, to be honest my job next year is pretty huge paying (actually if anyone wants advice on getting ridiculous law jobs/into law in the UK, message me/comment and I'll answer basically anything), and I can pay bills etc now without needing to withdraw ever.
  • Bumhunting vs Challenging myself - I've been trying out something I saw in one of the Dogisheadsup videos (incidentally, these piss pure excellence, watch them), which is bumhunting if I'm anything but on my absolute best form, but playing anyone when I feel good to grow a bit as a player. Also looking at my results my biggest wins have been when I've found someone who's not a fish really but just a bit worse than me who keeps reloading/will multi table me so actually playing reg-gy guys when I'm feeling strong is working out well so far. This seems like something maybe anyone reading this interested in HU might like to try.
  • Posting hands - I will post some hands here, maybe some bad ones which make me feel retarded, some good ones which make me feel clever, and some funny ones.

Back...in black (green)

Hey, haven’t posted in a while, needed some time to recover from my roll running away from me as fast as it could. I’m back to playing and posting now, working on grinding it back up.

I really think I let things get away from me, losing, then playing too many tables when I was too tired and not studying enough to play well, trying to just maximise hourly to get out of my swong as fast as possible.

I think this was a mistake, so I took a few days off and re-read Improva’s book, watched some videos (I really liked Grindcore’s first video, I think i’ll rewatch it and take some good notes, definitely would recommend) and reread elements of poker, and got back to playing. I’ve also been forcing myself to post on 1-2 hands/day in detail across the various forums I frequent, and it’s really noticeable I’ve been playing better since I’ve been doing this. I think maybe I’m beginning to get that the key seems to be to worry about getting really really good and that the hourly will come incidentally to that, rather than the other way round. Hopefully I’ll try and post some hands in here when I have more time to post!

In terms of life stuff, things have been busy, I’m still slaving away at the law but it’s interesting and I got my first batch of essays back with pretty kick-ass marks so that’s great, and me and the gf have a weekend in London and get to go to one of my best friend’s birthdays there also so that should be good. Also I’ve started towards setting up a new band here in Oxford with a friend from home, and one of my housemates, just need to find a singer now! My band at home should be recording over christmas. Maybe if that comes out well I’ll post some links to the tracks!

Sorry if this isn’t written too well, I’m in a real rush today, but thought it might be nice to post something. More to come!

Sorry guys

Hey realised I haven’t written in a while. I was going to post more but I think I might take some time off. Basically recently I’ve been on a pretty big downswing. I went -26bi since midway through last month, and I am down to like $800 to play with online. I no longer have any confidence in my game, and am pretty depressed about it in general. I think I’m going to need to take some time off, for a week or so, regroup, and try and grind it back up. To be honest though I don’t see the fucking point, considering chances are I’ll just go on a massive downswing and lose it all again. Sigh.

Will update at some point. I don’t know when.

Back to NL for a bit, contending with time

Hey, sorry I haven’t written in a while, just been very busy recently between academic work, Halloween, and trying to sort out doing something for my birthday (next week!). Thought I’d better write again though.

My frustrating downswing continued a bit, at PLO, and my WR halved, so while I was still a winner, and at an ok WR, like 4.5ptbb. I can imagine big downswings are pretty standard at PLO and something I’ll have to get used to. For a bit of a change, I decided to play some NL to rebuild my roll, and that went ok, pulling me out of the downswing a bit. I’ve been experimenting with mass tabling NL50 6m, 10-12 tables, selecting with Spadeeye and playing ~26/22. So far it seems to work fine, I had a couple of +2-3 BI sessions. There are also a couple of other reasons I went back to NL:

1) Lack of time to work on a new game – due to a really busy schedule at the moment, I can’t necessarily afford the study time I would need to get really good at PLO. I’m going to try and schedule better and remedy this, since I think given how soft the PP PLO 6m games seem to be if I could get a decent run I could move up pretty quick and make some decent $$. I’m not sure how likely I’m going to be able to find the time though, given that my schedule next month is really brutal.

2) Inability to play lots of tables – I know that ideally, I’d like to play more sessions/hours but with fewer tables and really concentrate,like I did over summer, and play my best poker, but currently I have time for like 1×90 mins/day session, if that, so to be able to put in hands, and to maximise my current hourly (which I’ll get to) I need to be able to multitable a decent # of tables at a solid WR.

3) Current hourly and WR – When my PLO WR was 2x my NL one it made playing PLO look pretty appealing, but now it’s actually less, and needing more BI to play, means that a) I can’t make as much now and b) I can’t rocket up through the stakes as much as I’d like to get to like midstakes. Unfortunately, due to my financial situation at the moment (significant discrepancy between my costs this year and the money I have, and needing like 10k for the bar vocational course etc next year so I can become a barrister – meaning I need to grind up poker money) I have to take the awful viewpoint of maximising my hourly NOW. And unfortunately PLO isn’t currently the way to do that for me. I’m going to try and play it more though when I can, or if things ease up.

So unfortunately based on current time and financial reasons, PLO is going to have to go on hold for a bit until things ease up. Which kind of sucks since if I had the time to devote to PLO now while people suck I could probably look forward to getting to reasonably high stakes over the next year and really making a go of it. I’m going to try and put in some hands at PLO though at the start of next month if I find extra time though since I’d like to master the game.

So far I think I’m going to finish this month +$1502 including tourney monies, which is good. Hopefully I can put in a strong month next month too!

As for useful content for anyone reading this, I’m slightly short at the moment but I had the thought that maybe I’ll try and write a few strategy entries, with HHs etc and trying to clarify for myself some things I picked up from videos/coaching. I was thinking barrelling might be good since I feel like I have a decent handle on that and think I could articulate my thoughts on it pretty reasonably, so I’ll try and write on that over the next day or two hopefully!

Frustrating Downswing

I haven’t had a chance to write in a while, so thought I ought to now!

Not wanting to be one of those players who only blogs when they’re winning I thought I ought to post. Had a frustrating 2 days poker-wise – had a -$131 day Thursday, (-160ish at PLO50, +30ish at NL100), and a -250 day today (NL100).

I think Thursday I played really mediocre, and deserved it, but today I felt like I played decently and ran kinda bad (just over 1bi below EV, felt like I ran sort of range cold too, getting raised in like every b/f spot, and got boat over boated AI on an unpaired flop, so meh), so I’m not too worried as long as I’m playing decently.

But it is annoying, since it wiped out a chunk of my cash game profits this month so I’m only up a couple of BI in plo/nl cash this month. Still like 4ptbb/100 overall despite bleeding bb/100 at nl this month, and still up ~$1400 thanks to some tourney moneys

Never mind, I think I deserved to lose Thursday and I run hot a lot so I guess I had a day of being coolered and missing everything due today. Happens. Also there’s still a week left in the month to go on an omaheater, since I think I’m going to stick to PLO50 6m till the end of the month, which has been my bread and butter game this month, and try and finish well. PLO is still going well, I’m at 8.8ptbb/100 this month >6k. Hopefully next month I can put in some actual volume!

Here’s a funny hand – the guy is like 43/27 and retarded, the 3b is 100% for value. I could maybe have called the flop and let him bluff the rest off, but OOP, on a co-ordinated board, and versus a guy who probably won’t fold anything with SD value, I decided to just 3b in.

In terms of life stuff, things are good, still keeping my head above water with my masters work. Also went home on friday evening for a gig at a pub my band had played at before. That was pretty fun, as a lot of old friends from home were around, and I got to catch up with a lot of friends I don’t see as often as I’d like to, and have a beer or ten. The gig wasn’t bad either, the headliners were a very leftover crack-esque punk band called Officer Down, and things got pretty rowdy (small bar….big circle pit).

Other amusing shit I’ve found the last couple days:

Anyways that’s all from me for now, hopefully should be off out for a drink soon!

October continues - more PLO

Finally had proper internet installed in my new house, which is pretty awesome, so time to get back to regularly putting in hands and writing!

Been playing 6m PLO still this month – I had a break for about a week, so far I’m only 5k hands in due to not being able to play so much but winning at a nice clip – about 12ptbb/100. I’m fully aware though that this is a nothing sample and PLO variance could still quite easily take a gigantic dump right on my chest, though I’m hoping that doesn’t happen. I still think my PLO handreading is a bit shoddy, my W$SD and WWSF are both abnormally low – like sub 50 – but I’m still winning. I might be winning a moderate-decent amount of big pots (I’ve won quite a lot of deep pots) and then losing a lot of really small pots – but I’m sure I could bump both up. I do feel like I’m getting more comfortable with making big folds and sneaking in valuebets.

In terms of strategy things I’m learning, it’s starting to feel like there are a lot of reverse equity spots in PLO – spots where I have enough equity to satiate calling a bet but am going to have to fold if they bet again on just about any turn, and won’t necessarily know where I am and am either going to fold incorrectly or pay off incorrectly. I suppose a sort of example would be peeling a wet flop, where a lot of turn cards can come bad for me, with a marginal made hand and no redraw, or like a non nut draw multiway. So I guess I’d watch out for those type of spots in 6m PLO. I’ll try and dig up a specific HH when I get a chance! I’m still running equities a lot on pro poker tools and building standard lines since I’m not super far into figuring out the game yet.

In terms of life stuff, went and saw Zombieland – really enjoyed it – Bill Murray owns the screen – and seeing Woody from Cheers lighting up zombie ass riding a rollercoaster is exceptional. Also it has made me realise my new goal in life to hunt down Emma Stone, take her to my cellar, tie her to a chair, and torture her till she loves me. So I’d recommend that.

Other than that I have survived the 1st week of the BCL which is basically the hardest law masters in the western world – it’s hard stuff but it’s interesting and I signed up for it so I guess I can’t complain.

Also I have now got 4/5 housemates and my girlfriend all into The Wire. This is a good development since it means I can watch like multiple episodes a day, which is win.

Anyways hopefully now I can write more often! I have also just seen a leaked trailer for the expendables and it looks like the manliest film imaginable and it’s not even close!
