Poker Tournament Formula Book Review
First off it has been a very crazy week for me. Here in Norfolk
Va we have had some very bad storms and flooding, so I had a 3 day
work week. On wed when I saw how bad it was I was like yesss 2 days of poker
and the weekend coming up. Well that didnt work out. The power went out and
even worse when it did my laptop was not even charged up so I have been living
in the 19th century for the past 2 days. The lights came back on tonight at 7
and now I appreciate the little things again like HEAT!
Today I want to review a couple books that I picked up from Barnes and Noble last
week. The first one is called “The Poker Tournement Formula†by Arnold Snyder.
This is a great book for everyone playing MTTs.The reason I say this is because Snyder basically teaches u how to think like a winning tournement player. I am just gonna give one example to crystallize my point. He makes the point that poker tourneys are like Rock Paper Scissors. You have 3 weapons in a poker tourney Chips = Rock,Cards= Paper, and Position = Scissors.Position beats cards, Chips beat Position, and Cards beat chips. This system is for fast online tourneys not live tourneys that last a few days. Instead of sitting back qnd waiting for cards this system gets u into the mindset of using all of your weapons and not just good cards. It may turn some off when I say system but to me system is like playing within a structure that maximizes ur fundamentals and potential. Not some infomercial make 10,000 dollars in online poker BS. In sports the 49ers Bill Walsh popularized the “West Coast Offense Systemâ€,In basketball we have the Phil Jackson’s"Triangle", Dean Smith’s “Four Cornersâ€,Greg Popovich’s “Hack a Shaqâ€, Chuck Daly’s “Jordan Rules†etc. These systems are comprised of unorthodox tactics used to acheive a certain result. Why in poker is the word system such a bad word? This book is not a silver bullet and the techniques he proposes have to be practiced and used in the right situations. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. That being said MTTers if u are into reading books to improve ur play there are only 3 books u should buy before this one once u know poker fundementals, HOH 1 and 2, and Kill Everyone. This book is alot simpler read than KE but KE has more value I think.
Well The other book I got (the reason I bought 2 in the same day is because both of these books have been hard for me to find)is called Poker Tournements One Hand at a Time. Ill pick up from here on my next post

Good stuff. I'll throw up my review of Poker Tournament Formula 2 on my blog this week hopefully. On one hand, it seems like the author has the opposite view of what we're learning on DC, but I think he adjusts a lot on specific situations - which is really the point of learning poker. He talks about Chip Utility and how to play when you have 30BB, 60BB, 100+BB. Chips are bullets. He talks a LOT about tourney structure and most of TPTF2 is for DEEP tourneys. He compares small Ball vs Long Ball. makes a little fun of the "Harrington bots."..lol. He breaks up the stages of a big tourney into 5 phases.
Good work JoeyG !!....run good
