Big Brother is Watching You (Dropbox is Awesome)

I am not really playing any volume of poker at the minute. I have a real-life commitment that is leaving me with very little free time to play in a focused state of mind. However, I am remaining active with my Secret HQ group and the Mount Robusto platoon . My platoon had its first homegame last night, at the 1/2 8-game tables on pokerstars; guest stars were Vingtcent and BestHand17 ; maybe more on that later.

We have taken on quite a few new players at the 50NL level into our Secret HQ group. They all seem to have a fairly solid ABC game, and are looking to improve. As part of my commitment to the group I am providing a fair amount of hand history review, but this process often gets delayed by having to mess around waiting for email attachments and whatnot; things always get put back and I end up with no HH to look at for weeks on end. No longer!

I have been using dropbox for quite a while now. It is an online data storage service that can be used to synch the contents of a folder (your ‘dropbox’) across several computers. I have it installed and synched on all my laptops and PCs, and it saves a ton of hassle by eliminating the need for USB keys and multiple copies of the same document flying around at the same time. In short, I love it. But there is more…

Dropbox gives you the ability to share a sub-folder within your own ‘dropbox’ with any other dropbox user. I have a shared folder with one my students and whenever he wants a HH review, he simply dumps his HH into the shared folder and within seconds I receive a system notification that new files have been deposited in my dropbox. I can review the hands at leisure and get back to him once I am done. If I am busy I can even save a Word document with my comments into the shared folder; he then receives a notification of the new file and can read my comments at his leisure.

So how is this awesome? It doesn’t sound like it is much better than emailing HH to one another. Well, as it is stated above it isn’t. Here is the version 2.0 roll-out of the plan: one of the guys in our group stakes quite a few people, but often has delays in receiving HH from his stakees. By sharing a dropbox sub-folder with his stakee, and getting them to direct HEM to archive their HH directly into that shared sub-folder, he is able to receive their HH in almost real-time. I thought I would share this solution with the community; I imagine that there are coaches who could provide a higher level of service using this HH sharing technique, and also several stakers who are looking to keep a closer eye on their stakees. Enjoy!

If you are interested in setting this up for yourself, but can’t quite get your head around the technicalities of it, just leave a comment, send me a PM, or contact me on Skype (jjd323)!
