Good Morning

It's been a while since I updated this blog. I've been busy with writing my thesis and looking for work in the real world. I'm going to try and get back into posting poker ideas and analysis. I have some mixed games ideas that I've fleshed out and want to write about. Coming soon...

Also, as an amuse-bouche, here is a hand played by DC coach Vingtcent, which I thought was mildly hilarious:

Lowball27 Evaluation in Excel

I have been working on a Lowball27 Hand Evaluation library in C#. I have now exposed the methods from this API as a set of User-Defined Functions in Excel. You can follow my progress in this thread on 2p2. Please let me know if you try this out; get in touch if you have any ideas about features that you might like.

The alpha release of v0.2 is available here

You will need the .NET 4.0 framework to use the Add-In. It is available from Microsoft here.

Pickled Ginger Moments

I have been listening to a podcast entitled This Developer's Life; the latest episode was all about being mean and is very much worth listening to. That is, if you are interested in the lives of software developers then it's probably the kind of thing you would want to listen to. The form of the podcast is stylistically based upon an apparently a more famous podcast entitled This American Life. If you are interested in the lives of Americans then I guess you might have listened to it before; I haven't. The form of the podcast primarily consists of short interviews that are played over music, which sometimes comes into the foreground to punctuate the different topics that are under discussion. Apparently the form of the podcast is really just lifted from a common cinematic style.

I am listening to EPTPE for the second time. I immediately noticed how the form of this series is similar to these podcasts, which means that it too has a cinematic flair. It is stylistically unique amongst the series that have been produced by DC; from Wikipedia: “several conversations between Tommy and Wayne [are] separated by sound-clips of piano music, which come between topic changes.” It happens that the presenter of This Developer's Life has commented on the format for his podcast (first three paragraphs). In these first paragraphs he gives a name to these cinematic flashes when "the music weaves in and out and serves as a conceptual break": Pickled Ginger Moments. I guess this refers to the eating pickled ginger between pieces of delicious sushi in order to cleanse the palette. This raises some interesting questions: If these moments are Pickled Ginger, does that make EPTPE a giant sushi banquet? Was Wayne the soy sauce? Who or what is the wasabi?

I finally got around to sorting out my Twitter account so that I can update from my mobile. I'll be giving it a test run today whilst I play the Cancer Research UK Charity Event at EPT London.

September. Whoa

Whoa where the hell did that month go?

Crazy work irl (finishing writing my D.Phil. thesis). I have so much to write about poker right now but it has to wait. Broke even on WCOOP playing only  8-game, HORSE, and triple draw tournaments and satellites. Small cash in the turbo 8game and a ton of run-good in satellites brought the balance.

I've been learning C#; I'm halfway through writing a little triple-draw trainer app. More to come on the other side of my thesis...

For those of you that haven't seen it, check out Hood's intro vid to his new software "The Combonator"

3-Handed 6-Card Ante-Up PLO with Discards is a Sensible Game

The game is Pot Limit Omaha. The table is 3-handed. The BTN is god. We weren't having much fun because most hands went like this:

BTN raises, SB fold, BB fold

Great. Self-dealt home games are meant to be action games; we made some adjustments:

  • 2bb ante
  • No blinds
  • Every player is dealt 6 cards
  • Every player must discard 2 cards face up, starting from the BTN
  • The flop is dealt immediately after the discards, with no pre flop option for any player

and it just worked.

Chrome and goo.gl

This post will save you time. If you aren't using the Chrome browser from Google already then you might be beyond help; if you are, you probably aren't using the goo.gl URL Shortener extension.

The user-experience of the goo.gl URL shortener is exceptional. A button is installed by the navigation bar that provides and auto-copies (to the clipboard) the shortened URL. Pasting long URLs into emails, forums, and IMs was never so easy, neat, and tidy.

They look like this: http://goo.gl/PiyX
