I think the crux of your argument is your opinion that the consumer needs some level of protection. If a company (like DC) advertises the coach, then I think they do have a responsibility to properly vet the coach. But I struggle with the idea of putting the onus too much on others. We, as consumers, need to do our due diligence to ensure we aren't getting screwed, and this applies to all aspects of life. When we get screwed, then we learn from those mistakes. Sometimes life just sucks, in a vacuum.

There's some confusion on leatherass. I brought leatherass up because he's a perfect example of someone who shouldn't write a theory book (along with almost everyone else) but can still teach a lot of important concepts that aren't related to poker theory. I also praised him in one of my earlier blog posts.

^If you mean the book Don't Listen to Phil Hellmuth by Dusty "Leatherass" Schmidt, that's one of the better poker books I've read. I have over 20 of them on my computer and to be honest there are only 3 that I found worthwhile: The Mental Game of Poker, Don't Listen to Phil and Mathematics of Poker. The rest weren't especially useful or relevant to today's games, I thought.

Let supply and demand decide the price, but people acting as watchdog and warning others is just as much a part of the market as supply and demand.

I have bought two ebooks, one felt like a complete scam, not so much because of the material, but because by watching the authors videos and taking notes I had practically written the book already. I paid $300 or so to learn nothing new. The days of crazy priced ebooks seem to be gone thankfully.

I think (and I think Tim's point is that) a coach can and should charge whatever the hell they want and let supply and demand decide, but that the consumer should be very skeptical of coaches in general (which is what his post was aimed at encouraging as to help the consumer avoid costly decisions). Thus he listed several characteristics of coaches that should heighten one's skepticism of a given coach, one of which happens to be charging a high rate without superb results at the tables, and another of which is over-use of buzz-terminology to appear to have more secret "new-wave" knowledge and skills than one actually has. Seems like perfectly reasonable advice to me.

Ummmm, you missed the point. It was a fictionalised date (as I'm not going to reveal the coaches name, either to Entity or in this blog).

I don't see why you think this decision is a troll. I'm not here trying to mess up a guys life or livelihood.

It's just the opportunity came up where it might be a good idea for DC management to put in place some measures whereby every x months they review the coaching roster. Ask the coaches:

Their price
Their w/r
Their volume
The popularity of their videos
(Other measurable factors)

It's not solely a case of supply and demand (where the market dictates prices across the industry fall). This coaches price has stayed the same yet his ability (in relation to the rest of the industry) has fallen.

By the way, I checked out which coaches released videos last June. There are 3 NL coaches who released videos that charge more than $100/hr for coaching - WiltOnTilt, Balugawhale, and Ansky. None of whom are known for playing 20+ tables.

We'll take Moe's video release on x June 201y:

I can show you that with a timestamp the >1 actions taken in the vid that are -EV.

Moe is happy to say his w/r is <1BB/100 at SSNL.

Moe chooses not to play many hands per month.

Moe charges >$100/hr for coaching.

Moe would be delighted to coach you (uninformed DC member).

These are all facts (and we're using 'Moe' as the name of the DC coach).

If we take the point about him making mistakes in his video. That is subjective yes. Taken in conjunction with the other points, it would be easier to see the mistakes as less a unique perspective from my p.o.v. (a microstakes player) and more what they are (-EV decisions which are some of the reasons why he can't beat the game. WHich he may be either consciously or not teaching low-level DC members the same mistakes. All for the low price of >$100/hr).

The problem now is that we're entering a realm of subjectivity. When you say "X isn't a good player" that is an opinion and examples you cite are also opinions. If you're talking about recent videos, have you tried asking him a question related to some of these plays you don't like in a non-inflammatory way?

Lets say there's a hypothetical coach called Moe. I think Moe is a laughable charlatan. Unless I have strong evidence to back up my claims I can't just go around telling everyone that Moe is a charlatan because for one, I might be wrong, and for two, I can't prove it beyond reasonable doubt. But I can encourage people to be careful. If people do that that are not only less likely to be ensnared by Moe but also other charlatans that I'm not aware of.

If you have facts and you've stated them, that's good. If it is a proven fact that X beats/beat the game for X bb/100 and you think that is not good enough for his or her price, then people will listen to you and make up their own minds. That is actively happening.

If you don't want to engage with DC appropriately on the matter, you can't ask for more than that. Saying soandso doesn't care or soandso isn't being pro-active enough are throw-away comments that stop anything from progressing and make it sound you're just trolling, which harms your entire discourse.

I don't have a beef with the guy.

I looked into many coaches on DC. Asked their prices. Watched their videos over a long period of time. ANd made an assessment whether they could help my game/in general, were good value for money.

He's not a good player (watch his vids. I'll point out some examples). And he's charging an extortionate price (in real world terms). And he's happy for naive micro players to pay the prices. And you don't give a s**t.

LOL, that's your right. And I'm not looking to PM Entity telling him such and such about y. If DC management aren't pro-active enough to regularly vet their coaches (in the case equate PRICE with CURRENT ABILITY (and I know we're getting into difficult measuring situations, as alluded to earlier in the comments, and prob the main blog post)) then all I can say is (when the inevitable negative thread on 2p2 pops up again), I told you so/I highlighted the situation (in this blog).

I think DC is a great community and place of learning. But some people are looking to rip people off/take every penny out of people they can. Let's face it, if he was a good poker player, he'd be doing this at the tables. But he's not. I wonder why???

And many are happy to stand by and let them. WHatever.

ralph (can I call you ralph?), I'd really like to not turn the comments into a witch hunt for a coach you have a beef with. That beef may very well be legitimate, but this isn't the place to pursue it.

When I wrote this blog entry I didn't have any particular persons in mind. I find it interesting how individuals have reacted to the post, but I have no problem with any individual. My problem is with the situation on an industry-wide level. Not just DC, not just 2p2.

I don't think DC have any checks in place to stop a coach charging whatever they want and nor should they. What I encourage is a healthy level of skepticism from the consumer as to why a coach charges what they do and whether that reflects an appropriate sum. As for checking that what a coach says about themselves is true and accurate, there are some checks DC can make but nothing would be foolproof depending on how devious the coach wished to be or not be.

If you genuinely feel aggrieved I would suggest the best way forward would be to send a PM to Entity and explain your issue in a clear and precise manner and await his reply.

^^^ That's the thing, it's v hard to make $100/hr these days unless you're good (possibly the requisite for a player to coach???)

This guy doesnt even beat $1/2, Small Stakes. And yet DC allow him to charge a high rate through their site (Okay he was a solid winner in 2010. But 2010 =/= 2013. Yet he's charging the same price as he did pre-Black Friday. And the whole poker landscape's changed (Though I personally didnt rate his vids pre-BF. At least you could say it was a fair rate at the time. Now it's obvious he's trying to suck every penny out of this he can yet offering nothing back to the community).

Do DC management have any checks in place to possibly prevent this? They're mucho rapido to post in the 2p2 threads when the inevitable thread (about x DC coach can't beat the game anymore). But isn't it easier to nip it in the bud now?

I think for the most part a coach's rate should be lower than the coaches hourly while playing. I think it's fine if a coach, because of demand, charges a little over his hourly. My problem is when they are charging far over what they are making at the tables for coaching. For example, a coach who makes $100/hr at the tables, charges $250/hr+ for coaching.

Saying that a coach should not charge more than their win-rate != saying that a coach should be a winner in order to be an effective coach.

For the first, I disagree. Why shouldn't/can't a coach look to make coaching their primary career? Maybe they like coaching more than they like playing? So long as the product is worth it, then I see no problems.

For whether a coach should be a winner... I think I can agree that in theory, it's possible for a coach that can't beat the games to be an effective investment, and that in practice it simply doesn't happen very often if at all. So I 99.9% agree with you that a coach should be a winning player before a student thinks "hey I should pay this guy to teach me how to win".

B-rye88,

"(2) This seems silly for the same reason Improva gave Yugiohpro (if I'm remembering my blogs correctly) and the reason SchFerreira gave. Purchasing coaching is an investment. I don't give a rats ass what threads13' winrate is, the question is whether his coaching of me enabled me to make more money."

A coach is of course free to charge whatever they like and offer whatever services they like. The consumer needs some protection however and in my opinion a good way for the consumer to protect themselves is to settle on a coach that is not obviously making coaching their primary career investment and is not being obviously greedy with coaching fees and look any crossover of the two.

This is the main area where I think we will never see eye to eye. I am not trying to advocate that there is one right viewpoint, just that X is my viewpoint. The coaches winrate thing has been a bugbear of mine since day 1 (which is 2007, I guess). Coaches have a doubly hard job because a winner isn't necessarily a good coach but a good coach must be a winner. UNLESS you are not teaching application of poker theory. For example, I would never want to learn how to play like leatherass. But I think I could/have learned a lot from how leatherass thinks about poker. This is why it's ok to for Tommy Angelo (+other good coaches in his area that might exist) to do what he does.

Back in the day there was a classic counter to this which was "what about MDMA?" (if you don't know who MDMA is, a little research will be quick and painless) everyone held up MDMA as this amazing theory coach who worked with high stakes players but didn't play. But he did/does play! It was a horrible misreckoning (and probably still is).

If you want to take the standpoint that coaches don't have to be winners as well as good coaches, I understand it, but we will have to agree to disagree.

"b) Also, it always strikes me as creepy how incredibly strong marketers some of the worse coaches are. I think that is why you tend to associate stuff like ebooks/group choaching/ads with bad service. What I'm trying to get at is that having an ebook obviously doesn't make someone a bad coach, just because bad coaches are more likely to come up with an ebook."

Of course not every single coach(es) who releases an ebook is going to be a scumbug. Just the majority. I'm sure for example that Matt Janda's forthcoming book is going to be useful to a lot of people. Not every item that comes through my letterbox at some is going to be junk. Just the majority.

"BTW, another co-author of the ebook makes what are probably the only HUNL videos worth watching (and paying for) these days."

I am almost certain this is wrong. But if you are saying X makes good HU content, I won't disagree with you.

A good coach:
Makes money from coaching
Is interested in the progress of the client (1)
Charges less than their winrate (2)
Enables a flow of information to and from the student (3)
Doesn't have an ebook (4)
Doesn't do group coaching (4)
Doesn't advertise (4)

(1) Of course I'll agree with this. I don't think this is mutually exclusive of the opposite, "Is interested in making as much money as possible from a client". What about people who want their client to succeed so that they will have more $ to pay them for coaching, and an inclination to continue? So long as the service provided is good, a level of greed on the part of the coach is fine. If that's the only focus, and there's no attempt to provide a worthwhile product in return, then we're in perfect agreement.

(2) This seems silly for the same reason Improva gave Yugiohpro (if I'm remembering my blogs correctly) and the reason SchFerreira gave. Purchasing coaching is an investment. I don't give a rats ass what threads13' winrate is, the question is whether his coaching of me enabled me to make more money.

Prices are not determined by what people think are fair. They are dictated by price, and utility.

I fully agree that caveat emptor is a shitty setup for most markets, and that having agents in the system (such as coaching sites, 2p2) that act as forces to enforce product quality and protect consumers (students) is a good thing. But thinking that a coach should charge less than his hourly when playing out of some sense of personal fulfillment, honour, or that it's fair, just seems silly to me.

(3) I agree with this so much that I honestly think it should have been at the top of your list and that the entire blog post probably could have been about it. Such an important part of mutually satisfying exchange between student and coach.

(4)I don't know if you read my post in the blown-up "hand-reading" thread, but the fact that you make videos means you advertise.

I don't really understand the hate you have against these though. It's the same as the coaching itself; it's a product. If the value to the student is worth the price, then sweet stuff. I've already stated I agree with having agents that protect consumers (I should also say that I think this is especially important in the poker coaching market, much for the same reason novice investors need to be protected when dealing with the financial services sector), but saying that "advertising is bad" seems just awful. What if a coach is positive that he's capable of delivering a good product and wants to share that with the world? Hell, what if he just wants to get rich, but has a good product anyways?

For the GTO NL2 thing, I think you're wrong for the same reason I think everyone who makes that argument is wrong. People like to say "You don't need it to beat uNL". That's not the question. The question is "will you get better at poker by studying this?". And really, I don't think you can tell me you won't get better at poker by studying how EV works in poker.

It's my opinion that a player will gain bigger edges on the competition, faster, by using the approaches to learning favoured by blah234, improva, threads, etc. It's quite possible I'm wrong, and I'm not going to sweat anyone who wants to think the opposite, but if someone at 2NL wants to know more about theory I see nothing wrong with that.

I definitely agree that there will be great confusion brought about by a transition to GTO-style learning; not much we can do about that but trust in and help the aforementioned agents to help minimize it, and provide resources for students to help recognize charlatans.

I think the worst part about this is that history thus far would suggest that there's a strong correlation between coaches with tons of advertising, multiple e-books, charge-outs > poker win-rates, etc. and scammers that provide little to no value to the people who trust in them. I definitely understand the revulsion people feel towards that, and the importance to the poker coaching market that steps be taken against that. I just think that saying "advertising is bad, nobody should charge out > their win-rate, etc." is reactionary and is looking at, imo, a weak-ish correlation and not causation.

BTW, another co-author of the ebook makes what are probably the only HUNL videos worth watching (and paying for) these days.

Not that I'm going to spend the $59.00 on the thing, just saying that because ebooks suck doesn't mean the authors suck.

Hey Tim, nice blog post. I kinda want to touch on a couple of subjects:

a) About X releasing "How To Crush Online Poker in 2013": I've actually had coaching with one of the co-authors of the ebook (about a year ago), one of the most respected coaches on 2p2, and I can say it was worth every cent I invested. So yeah, just to clarify and keep in mind that X has some top notch coaches and their reputations shouldn't get dragged along by whatever bs marketing ploy X employs. Overall, as you know, I agree with your general opinion on poker books, videos and coaching.

b) Also, it always strikes me as creepy how incredibly strong marketers some of the worse coaches are. I think that is why you tend to associate stuff like ebooks/group choaching/ads with bad service. What I'm trying to get at is that having an ebook obviously doesn't make someone a bad coach, just because bad coaches are more likely to come up with an ebook.

c)I think it's ok for anybody to charge as much as demand possibly allows. After all, you're basically working overtime and on time that could be spent going out or being with your family. I think that if paying 1000/hour to get coaching from NL2000's top winner of 2007 isn't worth it, the market will eventually correct that. Marketing only goes so far. Also, the real problem there are the people who wont even do a tiny bit of research before commiting such huge investements.

d) The Council of Poker would lack any legitimacy and forever remain in obscurity without Phil Hellmuth's participation and endorsement.

I only brought it up because the blog enabled me to (so agree there's no point going into the justifiable price argument).

I'll just mention numbers then leave it at that. If a $1/2 player 20x tables and wins at 1BB/100, his hourly at the tables is ~$40. He decides not to play regularly but his coaching is available on DC per hour for > 3 times his hourly playing the game.

I'll let the numbers do the talking.

mitch, I've heard a lot of people praise Tendler's work. I don't think particularly it is for me, but I accept it might be for others. The important factor is that tilt/A-game/lopping off the C game/whatever you want to call is addressed at the same time but in a separate space to theory.

ralphcifaretto, you are definitely entitled to your opinion and I do not think DC is the type of site to deny you expressing it (assuming you're not trolling, which you aren't). However, I'm definitely not trying to start a "who has justifiable rates" discussion because it can never be solved to satisfaction (of the truth). Instead I simply encourage everyone to employ a healthy sense of caveat emptor.

+ 10000.

There's a coach on dc who's rates are soooooo inflated it's unbelievable. I'm just a poker learner, and member of the dc community so my opinion is just that, an opinion.

I also feel that a coach should cost as much as his hourly would be. Especially 1 who only plays ~200nl, and doesnt seem to beat it for a large amount. The reason I'm saying this, the opportunity came up (this blog). And I dont like to see naive people get ripped off.

I know its up to the consumer to decide whether a coach is worth their prices, and who am I to say x coach is too much? But if a guy can't beat the game, he shouldnt be charging $[a large number in real world figures]. And DC should be really regulating, if he's going to continue being advertised on this site.

Just to be clear, the gentleman I was having a discussion with in the comments must have deleted his own, I have neither the power nor the desire to do so.

We were having an interesting (I thought) conversation on whether or not my post was hypocritical. For the record, no one has called me anything. I don't socialise with any pokerbros and I play poker with chat turned off so I'd have no idea one way or the other. The blog is mainly for entertainment purposes, hence the post in the first place.

Whether I am truly as bad as the pokerbros is something I will meditate on at the next Shamanic Hand-Reading Workshop with Matthew McConaughey.

I know we got a bit sidetracked talking about how great 'Pool is but seriously how much do you put into table selection, especially post BF?

I'm really being hard on myself to table select better although sometimes it can take about 10-20 minutes. I often am looking at a table I'm in line for and rejecting it just to get back on the same list. Its getting kinda hard to get the loose on the left and tight on the right but maybe since the stakes you play are so much higher that it won't matter since they are mostly regs.

There's one thing that irks me and a lot of my sports friends...after some sort of collision either by sporting object or players on the field, you can almost always hear a commentator say, "That was a near miss".
I decided to stop sports betting because it was taking up 8-12 hours a day with all the work I was putting into it. I'd made enough and wanted to focus more on my wife and family. I gave poker a shot and decided that if I could make it work after coaching I would keep doing that and if not I'd look into something else. The most important factor was being able to work the hours I chose. This was about 5 years ago. It's been fine so far.

I spent a good deal of time studying the UK and Irish horse racing markets. It's a widely misunderstood field. If one was to just try and pick winners in every race, I don't think racing experts would do much better, or any better, overall than clueless punters just guessing. However, there are some ways to make a profit without resorting to trading on prices. Contrary to popular belief there are some "systems" that work, but typically they return only a small investment per season. For example, one method that will always return a profit is the "Millard Maxim". That is, you look for maiden races (a race in which no horse has ever won a race before) for 2 year olds only where the favourite is a horse that ran very well last time out. This horse will invariably be odds on, allowing you to lay it for cheaper than 1 unit. They almost never win. There are probably 30-50 of these per season and maybe 5-10 win. Each time you are risking somewhere between 0.5 and 1 unit to win 1 unit.

However, if you really want to be successful you had to develop your own ideas. I had a lot of success studying up on the breeding of each horse to determine how well that horse would handle the going that day. The going is the most important factor and far more important than the quality of the horse. It's just a fact that some horses love soft going and some love firm. A Ferrari will beat a Land Rover in a race on tarmac, but who is going to win in a swamp?

Another thing was to learn which yards would bet on their own horses. That meant monitoring each race in real-time using an API app and looking for money coming in a minute before the off. For some training yards this means nothing, for others it's extremely significant. Then you could also learn which yards would strongly prepare their horses for maidens and which wouldn't. A horse that has never raced before will be a very high price, even in a maiden, unless it's from an extremely prestigious yard. However, some yards would put out very well trained first-timers and thus their price would be artificially inflated. I had a 90/1 winner from this, as well as many 30-50/1s.

And there's much more. All in all, it's a ton of work that's mainly why I stopped when I had to start spending more time with my young family, as it was taking 12 hours or more per day to do all the studying and processing. Poker earns me slightly less, the life rewards are greater.

I definitely went too far when I said it was stupid in my comment, I didn't mean for it to sound so rude. Also my film comment is I agree irrelevant. But, I don't understand how people can say games and sports are incomparable. I'm not saying they are the same thing, just that they can be compared. Hell you can compare anything that requires repetitive actions or competition versus an opponent to a sport. You can compare sales to a sport. I think it's important to be open minded and take certain techniques from various fields to improve in others. That's all I was saying, I didn't literally mean to stop writing blogs, just that if you can't see similarities between the two then it's worrying.

Poker is just so fundamentally different to just about every sport I can think of that this comparison is silly. I also tend to agree with the 200nl grinding thing for the most part, maybe not the timeframe but more just that if people don't work on their game for long periods of time it's a great indication that they are very unlikely to make it to the top.

The point of the film and whether I missed it or not is irrelevant to using those character types to highlight an existing phenomenon. As for poker/sport, it's a comparison that's come up so often that it's been thoroughly debunked. It had to be, because whenever one of the 2+2 coaching scam threads appears someone goes down the "Tiger Woods has a coach!" road and that needed to stop happening, obviously. I don't think I will stop writing because someone disagrees with me about something, but I do appreciate feedback both positive and negative - thanks for reading.

I don't know many nits with BRM like Mike, but we are of course each entitled to our opinions. You've called my post silly and plain stupid and then go on to compare poker to a sport.
This post is just silly really. Your examples don't even ring true, Leatherass has made vids for a bunch of different sites. Mike McDermott was a nit too and just had a dream of winning the main event some day. And, the comment about 2 years being some kind of magical cut off for your ability to progress as a player is plain stupid. If you treat poker as a sport then it's common in sport to not reach an elite level until you've put in at least 10,000 hours of practice and play.

leatherass makes vids for bluefirepoker. He joined and pretty much immediately Phil Galfond left. Make of that what you will.

I agree with everything you've said though- Most people are completely unrealistic about what's possible and how much work it will take, and what else (eg rungood, beneficial personal circumstances etc) is going to be required to fulfill their goals. For example I was reading one of those "challenge" threads on 2+2 where this guy said "I'm going to learn 2-7 triple draw and crush oogee". Oogee being one of the main TD regs who is always sitting at the nosebleed tables waiting for action. This guy starts off playing part time after work at the nanostakes and keeps posting... and keeps posting... and a few months later he's still at the same stake and still posting... and then someone says "What do you do to work on your game?" and he says "I don't really work on my game I just play". So he wants to beat the games build up a huge roll and beat one of the most well-known regs while not working on his game. Needless to say a short while after that his challenge ends with him going busto before he even gets to .50/1 TD.

The thread in question is at http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/174/poker-goals-challenges/10-20-triple-draw-playing-oogee-hu-791005/

Great post, I definitely agree especially about the coaching part. I kinda feel like that's why Grindcore's videos had a huge fan following (obv they were good videos too).

Personally I'm most definitely in the "idiot" category :P But yeah having spent like 5hours+ a day for the last few months studying my ass off I can say for sure that actually getting to the nosebleeds these days is like so fucking difficult and people probably aren't going to be putting in the effort to make that goal anything but terrible. I think being realistic about that stuff is definitely a good thing as a coach even though it's not the most glamorous thing and maybe not even what your students initially want.

It's a real shame that the only cinemas in the UK show nothing other than modern releases really. I'd love to open a small cinema, maybe 2 screens that shows older films that modern audiences never got a chance to see on the big screen.

I believe it's the next 10-20 years that films from the 40s and 50s start to become public domain which should be interesting.

Great post, guilty as charged with many of the points

-Do you berate fish live or online?

no
-Do you berate regs live or online?

no
-Is your immediate happiness directly related to your session results?

yes
-Do you feel like you have played well after a winning session and bad after a losing session?

no, i look at EV, which comes later
-Have you ever lied about your winrate "because that's what it would be if you didn't run so bad"?

no, but running bad at higher stakes hurts a lot more obviously
-Do you frequently comment about how terrible certain regs are to your blog/Twitter/Skype group because it makes you feel better about your own game?

no
-Do you grim or slowroll people who don't deserve it? (Who deserves it? Shortstackers and people who have done it to you.)

no
-Do you sit out/change seats instantly in rhythm with the fish?

yes, but this is good right?
-Do you refuse to play HU with any other player who isn't a certified bloater "because of variance"?

no
-Are you obsessed with yourself or others running behind or ahead of EV?

yes haha
-Do you feel that you should have won pots that you did not win?

yes
-Do you feel that the work you have done entitles you to a living from poker?

no, and it isn't my job
-Do you feel that you definitely deserve to earn more than Bob because Bob is a total fish, man.

no Bob is cool, he's enjoying it
-Do you often mock mass tablers with low winrates and massive earnings because every time you've tried to mass table you've failed miserably?

no I admire big winners regardless of their style
-Do you classify yourself as a certain type of player? (It's a LAG isn't it?)

no
-Do you insta tag certain players as nits/regfish/donks/tards/bumhunters when they may not be?

yes i tag fish instantly but thats due to 200 hand samples (small, but still enough to see a difference between a 55/2 and a 22/18)

-Did you watch every video on the internet (once without pausing, and skimming the mathematical ones), all the ebooks (none of which you paid for) and hired a coach that you didn't listen to and spoke over every time he tried to help you?

Yes and no. I dont watch many videos these days. But i studied them a lot and took notes on the ones I did watch. I have read most of the ebooks and again took notes. and yes I never paid for them, i was sent them in pdf by people who had either bought them or received a copy from someone who bought them. Ive bought over 60 hardback books however.

-Are all your poker friends exactly the same as you?

no they are much better than me, and actually do poker for a living, i have life leak issues which prevent me from being a true poker professional at the moment

Wonderful post! Thank you

GOOD POST

If I ever get back to poker I would become the biggest bumhunting dude that only plays long session + multiple table when running awesome, and play 2 and very short ones when I am running bad...

Just to sum up what you just said so I won't forget. PS .. buy MW3, it's da nutz

Hi, I was going to send you a private message but can't see how to do that so have had to post here! Was wondering if you have any slots for some poker tuition, and what are your fee's? I'm currently playing 10NL, have read loads of books and watched poker tutorials. Although I seem to be a winning player at these levels, my poker thinking is far from where I want it to be!

Love the blog by the way.

Seriously considered fold/showing every time I was in that spot from that point forward, but I think the masses would have rightly or wrongly had me thrown out.

I think one reason why these things hurt those players the most is that they are the most emotionally effected by small things. Highly recreational players are in it for fun and thus don't care too much. Highly professional players should have read and have a good understanding of Elements of Poker. The rest hinge their immediate happiness on every flip, bad beat... and accidental show.

I really liked the FWF Blueprint as well. Having him emphasize the number of times he went busto was good. I think people sometimes gloss over that part of their career when telling their story. Or were lucky enough to never have started that way. And it underscores the bit about college. W/o some backers at key times, who knows if FWF ever makes it to high stakes? And unfortunately, few people know backers, let alone ones willing to stake a college dropout.

I'm guessing it's a combination of having observed and talked to others who do this and thinking that their hand is sometimes good while not wanting to give up but not knowing how to best proceed? Just taking a stab.

Good observation on wanting to buy a showdown. I never really thought about that before, but it's sort of like that limit play where you raise a draw on the flop in order to see a river or whatever. Thanks, I feel enlightened. :)

I do, in some aspects anyway, understand WHY they make plays like described. It's because they are trying to protect their hand/buy a showdown. I can understand why fishier players at the micros would do this. But the people I were playing live were clearly not fish (in the classic sense) but seasoned live regs. What I don't know is how they come to learn to play that way (it's not from any kind of online training site or coach, unless there's a really really bad one out there I'm unaware of).

I see this type of action from microstakes fish online as well, and I wish I understood it. Since I suck, the illogic of it throws me for a loop and too often I just end up paying off light, so apparently it can somehow be a good play vs stationy tagfish such as myself.

The trick is to set the chips next to each other, then press the outside of each stack. They just riffle themselves from that point. It really only works on felt.

Another good one to work on is where you take 3 chips, cradle them in your middle, index, and ring finger. Use your thumb to bring the front chip to the back by sort of flipping it over. That'll give you a good sense of chip dexterity.

I can only really comment on the places I've been, The Fox Club, Empire and Vic. The Empire is good for the passing trade due to its location but seemed a bit all over the place when I went in, possibly just caught them on a bad day. The Fox Club is good for the most part but has terrible dealers and only tends to run cash up to 1/2. The Vic always seems to have a game running (don't try going to the Fox Club early on a week day) and runs from 1/1 up to high. Very well run, good dealers, sometimes not as soft as elsewhere, but definitely first port of call.

No, I don't. Honestly, I try as hard at NL5 as anywhere else. I just like to win the stakes aren't important (obviously to some extent they are, I'm making a living from midstakes and if I played highstakes the money would be important). I just ran really bad at NL50 and really good at NL200.

Do you ever get the feeling that you might not be playing as good at NL50, compared to NL200, because it might not feel as much of a challenge as NL200?

If you are a winner at a certain stake, how does one find the motivation for playing like 2-3 levels below?

Do you ever sit and play at a not so profitable/tough game/table just because you like the challenge?

Love the blog, kind regards.

When I was in English class in about year 10, we had to do a mock match report that we had to make up. At the time my teacher said that mine was fantastic and wouldn't look out of place in a national newspaper. Thinking about it in light of what you said, that seems like much less of a compliment. :(

Besides FT the only other site I have played on is Pokerstars and I left that for rakeback on FT. The only other bonus I get is free CR membership. As for U.S. sites, the only other site I would be comfortable playing on is Doyle's Room which has a 33% rakeback but how does there VIP program fare?

Some affiliates will offer more on "VIP" deals. If you don't know how to get one, looking around 2+2 may be a place to start. The problem with those deals is that you do need to ensure the affiliate and the skin are reputable, which isn't always possible. Many Euro site affiliates will start at 30% rakeback minimum, with a rakerace and with a frequent reload bonus that's much healthier than FT's. This obviously adds up to a lot more value and that value is crucial when you're trying to build a roll. If you can find all of those things and also a rakeback deal that's more like 40-50%, you can see how much more attractive that is to FT.

I don't know how FT's Black Card system will fare in terms of what new overall RB % people will be looking at. If it closes the gap, that's obviously can only be a good thing.

You don't have a large enough sample size! (obv joking)

On a serious note, what do you recommend your students to do when you say "seeking the best deal"? Finding the best rakeback% site or seeking deals on 2+2threads etc? I have tried finding superior rakeback%s, but most affiliates seemed to offer the same %?
In the "EuroTrips" series, you mentioned about getting good rakeback, but you never mentioned how to find them... could you elaborate or maybe give me a hint?

Honestly I haven't studied the changes/new features enough to have an opinion. It's causing a huge stink on 2+2 and I'm just allowing that to amuse me - people don't seem to understand that FTP is running a business and will run it in order to make the most profit. If they don't like it they can act with their feet and then FTP will be forced to make changes. As it stands I feel most of it is simply posturing from the userbase and that only a small % of the biggest nits will move away.
