Comment on MTTs variance and when to move up by iluv68

$2400 for $11 MTTs; Looks like I should grind up for a while longer and when/if I reach $3k I will take that step.

I always hear the about the massive variance in MTTs - which makes playing live so much more difficult. It looks like the advice is pointing towards a larger sample size of the same. Perhaps, when I have time and am feeling mentally great I will take random shots at the higher games. Thanks guys!

Congrats on your results. MTT variance is massive - you really have to grind a ton to make your edge work. I would say be way more conservative with your roll than you think you should be. Hope it goes well, but really don't just start going crazy with buyins cause you're on a heater.

BR management isn't really a one size fits all thing. Some like to take risks, some don't. There is a reasonable plan here
http://www.pocketfives.com/f7/sng-multitable-sng-mtt-bankroll-management-chart-guide-378221/

but BR will depend on roi and 120% is excellent, you can push it more if you are confident. A good thing to remember is that there is no stigma in moving back down if you hit a bad spell, it is sensible and protects the remainder of your roll. The sooner you drop back in hard times the more you have and if the run continues for a while the sooner you can go back up when it stops. Effectively the more likely you are to drop back in hard times the more you can push forward in stabs safely.
I don't really know about MTTs and quality but I do expect there to still be plenty of recreationals at the next level and I don't expect the quality to jump that much.

I agree the most +EV play is what I should strive for. If I make the same EV decisions as my opponents there will be no theoretical exchange of money in the long run. In this hand I made a lower EV decision (call - -EV) than my average opponents EV decision (fold - which is 0 EV ;)); therefore, I am losing theoretical money this hand/decision.

Well I think it's mostly on the right track, however there's one thing that should be noted. I think you should think in terms of making the correct range vs range plays. It doesn't really matter if your opponent makes the same play or not in a certain spot, you should always be aiming to make the most +EV play. Hopefully this comment post doesn't come off as being especially pedantic, I do think this is important.

If I make the same decisions as villain in certain spots it doesn't matter if I win because in the long run we will just be giving money back and forth. So theoretically there is no exchange of money.
If I stack KK preflop with AA, I should not be super happy about it, as I would stack off with KK vs AA preflop. No theoretical exchange of money

Yeah defs fold river, just by thinking through the ranges this spot might become more obvious. Keep at it!
