I Say Nay Nay goes on a diet!
Although I've said many times in the past I was going on a diet, I've never actually gone on a diet. This time, though, I really am going on a diet. No, really. I really am going on a diet.
I will be 32 years old in July. I'm 5'11†and I weigh 305 lbs. I weighed 320 in January. Since then I've been cutting back on the soft drinks I consume. I was drinking 3 liters of Diet Pepsi a day, easy. I loooove Diet Pepsi. Both my parents are diabetics, so we always drank diet soft drinks. I actually prefer them over regular soft drinks. They aren't as bad for you as the regular soft drinks, but they're still bad for you. They erode your stomach, weaken your bones, dissolve tooth enamel, damage your kidneys and liver, and a bunch of other really bad things. Since January I've been drinking more water. Not a lot, but I've probably cut my soft drink consumption by one-third.
Since January I've lost 15 lbs. Now, I know that 15 lbs in five months is not a lot, but it's still encouraging. If my half-*** dieting helped me lose 3 lbs a month, how much weight could I lose if I really applied myself? 10, 15, 20 lbs a month?
Reasons I am going on a diet
1. My health. I have high blood pressure and cholesterol, and diabetes runs in my family. On top of that, I frequently experience back pain. Not enough to keep me down, just enough to be a pain in the ***.
2. I'm tired of being alone. Sure, I could probably get an average-looking fat chick, but I'd rather have a hot piece of ***. Those are hard to get when you're fat, and balding.
3. It's getting harder and harder to find clothing in regular stores, and big & tall clothing shops can get rather expensive.
Goals
1. My short-term goal is to lose 15 lbs in the first 3 weeks. This should more than make up for the weight I am sure to gain in Vegas the week after that. It could also motivate me to stick to my diet while in Vegas. 15 lbs in three weeks sounds like a lot, but it's easier to lose weight in the beginning. I do not expect to keep losing at that pace for very long.
2. In a few months I'd like to be fit enough to try P90X. I've seen the infomercials, and it looks awesome. I know you don't need to be in great shape to start P90X, but I'm in such bad shape that I'd probably hurt myself attempting many of the exercises.
3. Proper weight for a 32 year old man with a large frame is 180-185 lbs. Truth be told, be told, I'd be happy if I weighed 220 lbs. I'd be happy, but I wouldn't be complete, because my fourth goal requires I be in great shape.
4. I'd like to learn Krav Maga. Krav Maga is a hand-to-hand combat system used by the Israeli army. I don't really know much about it, but from I've read on it, mostly from the Splinter Cell novels, it sounds pretty kick-***. It's kinda like half martial art, half street fighting. I have no desire to beat on people, but I would like to be able to defend myself. Right now I'm a sitting duck. A big, fat, sitting duck. Again, if I were to attempt to learn Krav Maga in my current state I'd probably hurt myself.
Strategies for losing weight
- Drink fewer soft drinks, and more water.
- Eat less white bread.
- Eat a decent breakfast and lunch, so I'm less hungry at night.
- No eating after 7pm.
- Fast food once a week, only.
- Eat healthier snack food. Fruits and vegetables over chips or chocolate bars.
- More physical activity.
Although all the strategies are important, the first strategy is the most important. As long as I can remember I have been addicted to soft drinks. For my family, they were the main beverage at breakfast (yes, even breakfast), lunch and dinner. If I can kick my addiction to caffeinated soft drinks the rest will be a piece of cake.
Mmmmmm, cake.
