Goals

I have set a series of specific, measurable poker goals for myself.  These are however, relatively long-term and I don't think it will be helpful to disclose what they are until after they've been achieved.  However, I will post about my progress and reveal the first 4 goals after either the 4th or 5th one is completed.  One thing which has been helping me is that I'm reading "The Poker Mindset".  So I have a note open on my desktop when I'm playing which says:

  1. Understand and accept the realities of poker
  2. Play for the long term
  3. Emphasise correct decisions over making money
  4. Desensitize yourself to money
  5. Leave your ego at the door
  6. Remove all emotion from decisions
  7. Dedicate yourself to a continuous cycle of analysis and improvement

So far, progress towards goal 1 has been excellent.

I really like these. Busy working through this book as well and I'm particularly untreated in hearing a bit more about how you've progressed with respect to goal 1 and what your interpretations of this are

That list is "the poker mindset". The idea is that these are seven important traits to work towards having the correct mindset to succeed at poker. I'm working on all of these at once and I have to say so far the transformation has been dramatic.

My goals are actually a different list, which I am keeping private for now. They are concrete and very specific and measurable. Progress so far has been faster than I expected, so I am just a bit more than a third of the way towards completing goal 1, which is looking like being one of the most time-consuming on the list. Goal 2 should be about a quarter as hard as goal 1, then goal 3 and 4 are really going to take a while. I expect it will take at least 9 months to complete these four. If and when I complete the first four goals I'm going to blog about them at some length.

What's important is not the goals, however, but the way in which I'm working towards them, which is by focussing on improving my game away from the table, and on improving my mental game using the poker mindset and the learning model and other stuff from Jared Tendler's book.
