I didn't play so great yesterday. I think I'm doing a better job of recognizing when I get bored, though. I still find myself being drawn to some larger field MTTs, but after a couple of hours, I'm just bored and want to do something else. The 90 man KOs seem a little soft right now, much softer than STTS, but I'm not rolled to play any volume of those. I probably won't play any today.

One thing I need to do is respect the players @ 2.25 more. When I was playing full time playing the $27-$35s I knew that calling shoves in spots with AQ was suicide because those guys never, ever had AJ. I started to put these guys @ the 2.25s on much wider ranges, but I can see I need to respect them much more because they are mostly pretty solid.

Update 12/30:
Games - 53
ROI - -10.94%
Profit - -$13.05

Today was just one of those irritating days where everyone was just going to suck out and losing was unavoidable so I'm pretty proud of myself for quitting today. I went into a few bubble spots as chip leader, but seemed to run bad when I started shoving a lot to position myself for 1st place. meh...hating SNGs today.

In other news, my birthday is Sunday. We received a couple of poker books in the mail yesterday that my wife had ordered for me. I'm kinda stoked about that. One is a cash book and the other is a PLO book. It makes me want to change it up again and stop playing SNGs for a while, but I won't because that's one of the things I struggle with I think. GOSH...this is really a crappy poker day, so i'm really glad that I'm not going to play any more today.

As a side note, I was able to sell my half stack, guitar, one of of my pedals on craigslist so I may be able to make a deposit in my PS account soon. I'm gonna go play my ukulele.

Still running terrific on FTP. My play is getting back to where it was, but the results are waaaaaaaay above where they should be imo....I mean, I'm supposed to be able to crush the 2.25s, but it's ridic.

12/25:
Games: 27

ROI: +89.63

Profit: +54.45

I'm kinda disappointed though because I played a $2 rebuy and I have a trend of wasting all my STT earnings on MTTs ...ah, the allure of the big score :)

That said, the nightly $1 Rush Rebuy seems like crazy, crazy great value...$10k guaranteed..I mean, it starts in 20 minutes and only 300 registered....nuts...

This looks like an interesting project.

I don't think that 6% is that outrageous for 27s. There is for example some guy named Skitz0frenik on Stars that has managed to get 8% in 2000 27s and 9% in 5000 35s. Probably he is both among the best players on the games and has run very well. The Stars rake structure makes direct comparison very hard. 16s are very popular because their rake is very small compared to the buyin.

People don't move up from 16s as much as they would do in FT where rake stays the same even when you move levels. So 16s are tougher than 12s on FT, because more grinders stay there, but lower rake makes them more profitable.

Don't stress about the amount of SNGs it takes. Even if it takes an average of 1000 SNGs to move up, you may run good and move up after 400 games or you may run bad and move up after 3500 games. Also all the plans you have made, you have made for someone who's among the best players on the level. Do you think you would instantly be among the best players on the level?

I think it is easily possible to get 10% at the $12 and even more at the lower buy-ins. I don't have enough data but there are a good number of players with such stats.
I would be careful about multitableing too much at the lower buy-ins. It is fine if your game is good and solid but I suspect that small increases in ability will pay off hansomely by allowing you to move up and it is difficult to improve if all you do is 8 table.

If you do not have HEM or PT3 I would definitely advise you to get it asap, I think there may be deals on DC. The HUDs on these should improve your ROI quite a bit.

Anyway, good luck with the task and keep us posted

@ Rigged: Thanks bro - good feedback. I'm working on something more specific to each site that I play. IMO, the $12s on FTP are tougher than the $27 on PS. Just seems like too many learning players on FTP trying to take advantage of rakeback so the games aren't as soft.

@ tychoon: I'll PM you when I get some specifics outlined.

Thanks guys. I can't imagine that I'll be gone too long. I love poker, but it's not too fun right now is all. It's weird because something will trigger a desire to play, but I can't sustain it right now.

Actually, last night I was reading an article in All In Mag about Phil Laak and just had to log in. I played 4 STT 6.5s and it just irked me because I played well but didn't cash in any of them. I was inspired enough, though, not to quit. I also played a couple MTTs and busted out 3 spots from ITM in a $10 rebuy. I played well even though I was extremely, extremely card dead. I finally caught QQ in my BB, but it didn't work out. Here is the hand. Oops!..lol. It was all good though. It was nice to play better.

You need to be able to deal with the swings if you are going to play poker for a living. You also need to exercise strict bankroll management. You do neither. I think you playing stakes too high is leading to your tilt because huge chunks of your bankroll are on the line in every tournament.

Stop wallowing in self pity and man up.

Good blog man...I read in "psycology of poker" that you have to define what u want from poker. That sounds simple money right? The thing is you said u wish u enjoyed cash games more. Now its basically a known fact that there is more money in cash games than there is in tournies. So that means enjoyment and fun may be a bigger priority to u than grinding it out at cash.No matter how hard u concentrate the attainable roi in sngs is so small these days its just a pool of frustration to me. Anyway man just my 2 cents no biggie

OK...Played a session. It felt semi-fun for the first time in a long time. I mean, it was OK, I just don't have remotely any desire to grind it out because even on a good day I won't win any significant money. I'm still drawn to the Guarantee MTTs....and it's really just images dancing around in my head of taking one down.

I ran good....sucked out more than my share...and definitely goofed up some bubble spots due to being out of practice. I mean, I played 1,647 hands in tourneys and had AA 8 times, KK 11 times, QQ 9 times, JJ 7 times...but more importantly I was 100% Win% with AKs, AKo, AQs, KK, AJs, 66, and AA.

The results were pretty typical of me when discipline isn't a priorty....which is basically always a battle fo me.

17 STTs @ 6.50 = +$67.70. 1st place= 4 , 2nd place = 3, 3rd place = 2.

I played 7 MTTs = -$111.60.

I played 169 hands of 25NL for +$21.24.

So, yeah, I need to leave the MTTs alone - which has been an issue for a while.

Still, though, I'm kinda sick of getting my whole stack in based on stack size, position, ICM, etc. It just seems like you have to get lucky to win now-a-days. I really wish I liked cash game play more than I do. Anyway, it was kinda cool.....I didn't hate it today like I have been. I'm feelin a little less burnt out. It was almost fun./

In the short term it's all about luck and in the long term it's all about skill. If you're pushing one hand, winning is about luck. If you're pushing hundred thousand hands, winning is a skill game. Almost everything people do to decrease variance in tournaments isn't decreasing variance, but is decreasing their edge.

@ Velo: Thanks bro. You're probably right. I observed that many of the Sharkscope leaderboard folks play a certain stakes, but not a certain game. They'll load up 18, 45, and 180 man SNGs at the same time and I thought that it must be a formula for success. Maybe it is...for them. I just don't win enough to meet my expectations.

@ Browndog: Going to look for a day job. I've been in management in several different industries for about 15 years. The economy is tough, though. We'll see how it goes. I was playing tournaments with a ratio of about 8:1 SNGs vs MTTs. I experimented with FRNL Cash for a while and it just wasn't a good fit. I prefer it when opponents are forced to play with me or face getting blinded out. I switched back to SNGs because I felt like that gave me the best chance to win since I've spent much, much more time studying them than any other game.

I wasn't perfect by any means, as far as, game selection and BRM. I could have cut out larger MTTs completely. I just felt like I was really close to making a big score in a larger field. In the end, though, it was losing in the STTs that has really crushed me. I've always felt it was silly to complain in a STT when you get it in preflop as a 70:30 and lose because that's only 2 cards and poker is a 5 card game. In SNGs, though, you gotta make those shoves and calls. I can't get over this feeling that sometimes the sites just aren't going to let you win which is just a result of losing.

Regarding BRM, my goal wasn't to avoid busto. In fact, I withdrew about $400 from my accounts and still have to get $700 or so from my ewalletextress. Technically I'm not bust - I just don't feel like I can win so better to quit now.

I guess I probably spent $2k on coaching over the last 18 months. I've spent time with AMT, Rapid Evolution, and Jennifear - and they are all EXCELLENT. These folks gave me an excellent understanding of the game and I pwn peeps on a regular basis. Sometimes I have unrealistic expectations, sometimes I don't focus enough....sometimes it's poor BRM ....sometimes I don't take the stakes I'm playing seriously enough....but when I pull it all together I expect to win and that hasn't been happening for whatever reason.

Diggy, sorry man it didn't work out. I'm not sure what your regimen turned out to be over the weeks you were grinding. I know you were still playing cash and also SNGs. Any reason why you didn't just stay with one poker form/stakes to simplify things?

I don't know near enough about the life of a high stakes grinder, either cash or SNG, but I can imagine it's pretty taxing mentally at times, especially when it's new to the grinder as a full-time job. But it seems that just picking one full-time form of poker would be the best way to keep it simple, especially mixing bankroll requirements, etc.

Hope things work out for you and your family. Best of luck.

I played some yesterday, didn't show a profit but started to feel better about my play and my thought processes last night. I'm back today..well rested and focused.

If I play so my avg stakes is $20ish, I have about 100BI left. I'm gonna start the day by reading a little (but committing NOT to make drastic changes to my game), playing a small set of Super Turbos to get my aggression kicked in and then I'm going to play 1 perfect game to get my mind/confidence completely where it needs to be.

Bring on the rec players !!...run good!!

Probably does you good to take a few days off when poker feels too bad. I think you might be setting yourself up for a failure if you continue to play on higher stakes even though your bankroll is depleted and you need to make money.

If you absolutely have to make money, stick with the lowest variance games you play well (practically, leave the larger field games). Large field games are great once you have time to succeed, but if you're 4-tabling and have 11 days to make money, I think the probabilities of hitting a nice payday from those is not that great.

Poker is a real brainfuck and it has it's ways of confusing people. At your stakes you can play well and lose 800-900 dollars a day easy. On the other hand, you can also play bad and win the same amount. Just knowing where your game stands when you can't trust results is hard.

Whatever is soft.

Mostly 9 % 18 man turbos. Ill play 27 man turbos if they look soft. I've played the 90 man KOs but find that my time is better spent playing smaller fields. I've played quite a few DoNs. In fact I just got accounts with Bodog and Carbon (Cake in the past) specifically because their DoNs look soft.

I prefer turbos over standards. My strength is going to be push/fold so I want the stacks to get short asap.

I'm historically terrible with BR Mgmnt, but plan to do much better as I try to make this my primary income. I'll play $6.5 - $50 if it looks beatable depending on where my BR is at that moment.

That sounds about right though because Top Shark has me @ $1,843 in the last 7 days between my main 2 screen names and I was down a few hundred prior to Thursday.
ya think so? I also posted it in the forum. I just think villain is risking a ton of tournament equity at a crucial spot in the tourney. I was thinking the min bet indicates a trap wit AA/KK sometimes, but mostly indicates an attempt to steal but an ontent to fold to aggression....i have some more of these to post...i want to be the resident expert at shoving over weakness :)

tbh, I'd been trying to put in Cash volume sine July 1st, but it seems like I'm an even worse cash player (but me and Rapid EV are working on that;).

On 7/19 I decided to start playing tourneys again. Since then I've played 568 SnGs for negative $221.

My goals were to:

1) Begin focus on cash games. DONE! Logged 13k hands since Dec 1st.

2) Post notes for NLHE Vid Series: I've been spending most of my time reading NLHE books this month. I'm learning a TON, but making some big mistakes. Me and Joey G been getting together on Wednesday nights to talk shop. Good Stuff +EV. I'll probably post notes from From The Ground Up by end of the month.
3) Make at least 3 member vids.:: My laptop won't record the vids while my PT3 is running, so it's tough, but I'll get this done.
4) Volume Goal - 13k hands. I'm OK with that. I've gotten about $70 of my FTP bonus and $30 in RB.
5) Blog Series::: Haven't done this, but will do it starting this weekend. I'm hitting a MAJOR wall in the sense that I've lost HUGE pots making plays that I think are "correct" even though my gut says NO !!...Starting this series may get me to remember something I've forgotten.

I've gone on a 14BI "downswing" if you can call it that. Is it a downswing when you are playing badly? I've lost some big pots where only 1 hand in villains range can beat my hand - and there he has it. At the same time, I need to learn to fold flushes on paired boards when passive players are raising - even if the flop is 554 or T77. When passive players raise - FOLD. I'm a little bummed, but not deterred at all. I'm focused, driven and dedicated. Just sux sometimes to think you have it locked down, then CRASH..phuuuuuck!!!

All good though, Blog tilt is much better than loose tilt :)

NOTE TO SELF:

November Goal: Finish posting last man standing series, then post Online Tells and DoN Strategy.

Potential future project - compile step by step for n00bs to teach them what order to learn and how to sort info up to this point in the journey. Foundation for learning, how to grind a bankroll, which games to play, which games to progress to, which single vid in each series makes a certain point.

11/14/09 - Just finished a session tonight that was, well, freaken disgusting. I refuse to use the term "bad beat", but I lost some big hands in very interesting ways. It doesn't tilt me. If I choose to play push/fold, even in the right spots, sometimes 32o beats my 99. I think it's kind of fascinating really. Speaking of tilt, though, I was watching Last Man Standing AGAIN - episode 8. AMT talks about identifying what tilts you. For me, it's money issues in general. I've dedicated myself to learning poker for a part-time income. The longer I play with proper BR Mgmnt, the lower my bank account is getting. Not going to let that affect my decisions going forward - done. I'm playing REALLY well. I feel like an athlete talking about how things "slow down." Watching these series again is helping I think. Also, the commitment to study more than I play is helping too. I wasn't opening up SNGWIZ near enough. Also, I started playing the DoNs on Stars again. I made so much money over there. I've been running a couple of those off to the side when playing regular tourneys. you can almost play them without thinking. I don't know why people hate on them so much - since the point is making money. I'm still not beating any other game consistently, but I still feel like I'm playing...and more importantly IMPROVING.

Anyway, here are the updates:
Bankroll: Pokerstars - $60.25********Full Tilt $21.06 (I said it was a disgusting night:)********************************Rakeback: No reply from Rakeback Pros. I'm pretty much done with Full Tilt due to no rakeback. As soon as I can spare some $$ to open an account on bodog or something I'm out of there indefinitely*****************Spending more time studying than playing - CHECK! **************Risk Averse - I'm really developing here. HUGE leap forward. Decisions are getting easier. starting to looks forward to getting my money in methodically instead of shoving to take the pot down immediately**********************Videos? - May have to compromise on this goal. My laptop just won't run all the programs. My anniversary is next Saturday and I'm hoping my wife got the hints I dropped about tigerdirect.com************Reviewed quite a few more vids, but only posted 2. I'm being very conscious to try to absorb the info rather than just rush to post it to hit my quota**********************Posting notes on 2 books - With my anniversary next weekend, I'm taking the entire week off from playing poker. I'll study every day during lunch at work and come home and post, this won't be hard to hit.

"As far as having the best hand, don’t make bet less than half pot because we don’t want peeps to catch a hand on the next card for cheap."

And to build the pot/get a bigger % of stacks in for our value hands!

This is a great idea man, I'm proud of you for taking this step. This is definitely going to aid in your thought process improvements. GL!

11/7/09

Not sure what the hell happened to my game since May. I used to be able to crush the $2 STT on FTP. I seriously can't win a STT. But I feel like I'm a MUCH better player. Weird. Doing decent on the MTTs. Really like playing the deep stacked KO tourneys. Thinking maybe I've gotten too loose, will review next week.

Bankroll:
Pokerstars: 4.40 (deposited $10 - geez)
Fulltilt: 84.12

No response from Rakeback - won't be at Full Tilt much longer.
Studying more than playing - yes so far.
In the process of becoming risk neutral, getting sucked out on more...meh...staying focused.

1. Not yet. Computer is a piece of crap.
2. Reviewed 3 vids, not complete series. Will do by EOM.
3. Reviewed and posted 1 book.
