Put in 2mi today. 1MPH seems to be the magic pace for coding. Might be able to handle a bit faster with a trackball - typing is super easy up to 2MPH but it gets a bit harder to read lots of text & is definitely harder to use the mouse.

New home office setup

Spent the entire weekend installing new hardwood floors and getting my new home office setup. Almost done - still waiting on the treadmill (I'm installing it underneath the stand up desk, like http://www.instructables.com/id/Treadmill-Desk/). Going to be pretty stoked to get the setup done. The current setup is a GeekDesk with two monitor arms on the back from Ergotron, a 27" iMac and a 30" Dell 3008WFP (leftover from my grinding days - now it's primarily for grinding on code).

Gonna be quite the sick setup once poker is legalized and regulated and I can start grinding again. :)

First thing I learned: it's a lot harder to design something that looks nice as a white text on dark background. Feel free to comment on it here - it's a lot harder to create depth overall but I think this version looks significantly nicer than what we had before.

First - for those who don't know - you can update your blog theme in the control bar that you blog from (http://www.deucescracked.com/blogs/yourusername).

Anyway - I decided to update the white blog template over the weekend. I'm working on learning more about the design and programming framework of DC to help us develop features and improve the site more quickly when I have an opportunity.

Let me know what you think, or if you notice any bugs in it. I've tested in a few browsers (we aim for compatibility in IE8+, Chrome, Safari and Firefox). Will be testing in mobile browsers (mobile Safari / iPad Safari) later today.

Man I suck at swimming

Getting back in the tri-training routine. Hoping to do my first tri this year at Ocean Shores, then do the Lake Stevens 70.3 August 14. That means getting more and more swim training over the next 6mo while I ramp up everything else.

Today's swim was a measly 15 minutes. Kicked my ass. I've never been a strong swimmer so that's going to be the real challenge, but fortunately the pool is ~5min from the office, so I can try to get 4-5 sessions in per week while I get the hang of it. Going to watch the Total Immersion DVD set I got last year and practice some of their drills as well.

Overall goal for me: 2012 Ironman.

On balance, marathons, and poker

On my recent appearance on Hey Ball, the guys and I talked mostly about marathons. Near the end, Joe mentioned that he was going to try to tie in marathons with poker (or ask me if the two were related at all). At the time I would have said no, but apparently the question was bouncing around in the back of my head.

After the my recent marathon stint (3 in a little under 30 days - ending with NYC about 2 weeks ago), I was pretty beat up. I took the first week off and last night returned to do a boot camp that my wife Kate runs. Today I hit the gym and elected for the rowing machine.Â 4000m and 18 minutes later, I was wiped.Â I got off the machine and the link between marathons and poker popped into my head.

People often assume that if you run a ton of marathons, you must be in great shape. I don't really think that's true - I think that if you run a ton of marathons, you have to have a lot of dedication, the ability to push through pain, and you have to enjoy running. But you aren't necessarily in great shape, as I realized today.Â

That's where I see the direct tie-in between marathons and poker: in order for you to be in truly athletic shape, you need to not just be capable of feats of endurance, pushing through pain, and to be dedicated, but you also need to be balanced - you need to have some degree of fast twitch muscle fiber training, you need to be able to sprint, and you can't ignore your upper body or your core exercises. The best runners I know are very well balanced athletes, and it tends to show in their results and in the amount of time it takes them to recover post-event.

The same is true to a HUGE extent in poker. I've been doing a fair amount of coaching recently (for people who donated to my charity for the marathon), and I've been seeing a lot of different leaks that students have. Some are primarily of a technical nature, but others are very much based on mental control. Regardless of the player, I see that very commonly, people focus only on one element of their game, much to the detriment of other skills. People who are world class players are often very well balanced - they understand game selection, emotional control, and a multitude of other topics in addition to being fundamentally sound in the games they play. You can still be a good player without excelling in all areas, but it's unlikely that you'll ever truly be world class.
