Whirlwind week

From NYC straight down to Portland. Kate’s running the Portland Marathon today, so I’m chilling in a Stumptown Coffeeshop downtown as I’m not up to the mileage necessary to run a full quite yet.

On the topic of running, I read an AMAZING book on the plane Friday that I’d highly recommend to just about anybody. It’s called Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes and the Greatest Race the World has Never Seen and I tore through it on the plane, finishing it in a day — first time I’ve blown through a book at that pace in a while. It’s a cool story about the Tarahumara Indian tribe, a tribe that is well known for running hundreds of miles at a time, but it brings in discussion about Ultrarunners (people who run 30+mile races in crazy conditions) and recent discoveries in how we understand the evolutionary role running has played in our development. Crazy cool stuff.

Free Flash Weekend has gone very well so far. I’m happy to see that DC has handled the server load quite well without falling apart (our traffic nearly doubled at one point), and people have been responding very well to our “Get HEM and Tommy’s Book free” offer. It’ll be a few weeks before we see how everything settles down from the quick growth, but I’m looking forward to welcoming a new round of DC members to the forums that never would have found us without us trying FFW as a promotion.

Ok — time for some more coffee and to catch up on blog-reading. Apparently that’s replaced the old-time tradition of a Sunday newspaper and a cup of joe. Ah, technology.
