Variance in PLO

I do run pretty shitty right now but I feel I play OK and that what matters...

The hands from around a month of play (PLO10 and PLO30)

BTW, why the fuck I need to have a downswing every single time I try to move up? Guess, at which place in a graph I moved to PLO30? :D

It is almost funny but it happened every time I tried to move up in stakes during my poker carrier. I am sure it is not because of amount of money on a table because I already played NL100. NL50 was my main game for a long time.

Back to poker

It is a long time I did not write to this blog.

The main reason was that I had a big downswing. One of the biggest so far I would say. It started than I took a shot at PLO50. It went bad...

I moved down to PLO25 and it continue to be bad... and finally I started to play some PLO10 even to get some confidence back but I could not win a hand. I decided to play some NLHE where variance is smaller and I have more experience but it did not help. I could not book a winning session in a long time.

So I decided it is a best time for a break. Furthermore, my exams were getting closer so it was a great timing to rest from the poker a little bit.

2 month with no poker!!!

After the break I decided to come back fresh with a new plan. It does not matter that I am over-rolled and rake is insane at micros but I will start at PLO10 and move up not faster until I win 20 BYs in each level. I should have 50 BYs for the next level at least before moving up.

It works pretty OK right now, I moved to PLO30 recently.

Introduction

The new year is coming so I decided to start a new thing which I never did before - writing a poker blog.

First of all, a little bit about myself. I started to play and study holdem more seriously around the beginning of 2008. I played FR in the beginning and than transitioned to 6max. During this time I managed to climb from NL5 to taking shots at NL100. Well, not that great I would say in tree years, but I guess it is because I could not put enough volume. I had a full-time job, studies, girlfriend and stuff during this period. I was playing NL100 6max and felt that I have an edge in the end of this year but rather big downswing hit me. I made some break and moved down until even NL25 because I could not win a hand. I passed that and was recovering but the downswing eat like 50-60% of all 2010 winnings.

During the December I thought it might be interesting to try something new. I read some articles about PLO and watched a couple of videos here at DC. The next step was to try it in action and I started to play some PLO25. As usual with NLHE players at PLO I started to loose some so I decided that it is going to be much cheaper to learn at PLO10 because I was questioning every second hand by not knowing what to do and do not having a plan. It is better to pay 10 USD instead 25 to learn that shoving PF with KKxx is not right. :D

I played like 15k hands right now of PLO SH and I can say I loved it. So I decided to give a shot at PLO from next year.

I felt I got stuck with NLHE 6max a bit and I was tired of grinding NL50 and it was not giving me that passion any more. On the other hand playing PLO can just improve my understanding about poker overall.

In this blog I am going to document my PLO journey from 0 because this is a completely new poker game for me.
