Strategy Forums- Who is right?

OK so over the past 2 years ish that i’ve been playing the wonderful game I’ve frequented several strategy forums – 2+2 being an example, besides DC. I feel that i’ve learned some useful info, but also I’ve found myself disagreeing with some people, plain confused by others. On that note, I’ve been thinking about the whole thing…

Poker Forums in general provide a convenient place for every man and his dog, (regardless of experience/ability etc in poker) to voice their opinion on a particular theory or play. Great. Most of us have grasped the basics of poker, and we all have our own unique way of playing the game. But on the forums, who is right and who should we trust? What is the correct way of playing a hand or is down to opinion (there is no right or wrong)? Most people in the forums are amateurs. Sure, some people have built up a sweet bankroll over time, others are genuinely pro, plus they coach on the side etc, but most of us are amateur, enthusiasts, whatever. So whats to say certain people have hit the nail on the head with their opinion – are they qualfied?

When we post a hand up for analysis and get two solid reg DC members replying with totally different answers, both who we have found ourselves believing/agreeing with whatever in the past, what then? And what’s to say, just because we tend to think in a similar way to particular members, either of us are fundamentally correct at our grasp of a certain situation? Who do we trust when we get multiple answers or an answer from a guy that has posted for the first time? Are they always going to get it right, or do various minor leaks in their own game mean they are ‘blinded’ into thinking in an incorrect fashion at times?

What about the coaches? They know a lot about the game, right? Absolutely unquestionable. However, on this site i’ve seen coaches disagree with each other about a particular hand. So.. is _that the point? There _is no right or wrong, and in debating particular plays, we learn as it stimulates our mind into thinking about the game in general? I have no idea what my point is, its just a rant i’ve had going through my mind recently and I wanted to get it out there.

Comments absolutely welcomed obviously.

I think you just have to take their comments and not just assume they are correct. Listen to them and then break them down. Think about what they said and come up with what seems right to you. That is honestly how you learn from poker forums. Posting a hand and agreeing with the guy that has 10k posts isn't going to get you better.

Tommy Angelo talks about this in the 8fold series, he calls it the grey area where all the plays can be rationalised so there is no definitive answer.

Go have a look, he explains it better! :)
