I went to dusk til dawn last night to play some cash. I usually play £0.5/1, but when I went to the cash table I was told that the lowest they play is £1/2 today as there was a big tournament running.
Slightly out my comfort zone I got £200 out and started playing.
For the first few hours I couldn’t get anything going it was a joke. I played ridiculously tight for the first hour or so to get a feel of the table. Basically around the 4th time I had entered a pot, I tried a beautifully crafted (or so I thought) squeeze out of the blinds. My thought process was simple. Button raise, small blind flat, i’ve played so hideously tight, this is getting through.
DUMB MOVE on this table, they are NOT folding! I had to give up as a big c bet was getting flatted and so I check folded flop/turn. So I found my stack dwindling. An hour or 2 later I went to get some more monies but the cash machine said i’d took my limit out for the day, so I soldiered on with nearly half my stack gone!
Similarly to 0.5/1 that I play, there was a LOT of limping/multi callers if someone raised. But to spice things up a bit, there was a MANIAC on my right. He was your stereotypical ‘gambler’. I have never seen one guy hit so many hands in 1 session as this guy (who got up to like £800 and ended up going busto). He’d call pre with about 95% of ATC! He straddled most of the time and basically created a ton of action, made for some interesting dynamics.
I made a few sick hands eventually (so card dead until about 4 hours in) when I flopped a set and a straight in a short space of time and got up to like £350 ish, game on!
Then there was a young guy who had a face like a beaver that sat down, who really really pi55ed me off. Guys, if you feel what he did is fine, please let me know, but in my eyes, it was some kind of angle shoot.
I raise pre from MP with KJos. It was the first time in a while i’d been dealt to picture cards. He flats me from the HJ. Flop is King High. I don’t want to blow him off his hand so I check call flop. The river is lower. I could lead, again, but the turn bought a ton of draws which I feel could slot in his range (he had previously flatted my button raise with 24os and flopped a wheel, so he was a fish).
The river bricks. I start to play the hand through in my head. I realised, that while I was pretty confident I should have the best hand, he could still have KQ/AQ or a strange two pair, despite his range containing missed bluffs. I check again with the intention of snapping unless he over bets (usually mass strength in these kind of cash games).
Now for the cleverly disguised/confusing angle shoot.
He picks up some chips in his hand. His hand goes over the line, chips in hand, not touching the felt possibly like half a metre in the air. The dealer looks at the chips and says “£120?” He then verbally goes “£130”. I then grab 130 in my hand at this point, subconsciously, because as far as I was concerned, that verbal declaration is binding. He sees me do this, and then taps table! I went “woah.... you just said 130". Floor is called. I looked over this guy at this point. He looked terrified/uncomfortable. Little shitbag. The floor basically said that the bet would NOT stand.
Do not get me wrong, I made a mistake of grabbing my chips, but at the same time, he said out loud the chip denomination, so I took that as binding. Silly ruling. Still, got £100 off him anyway.
I cashed out for a £320 profit. Thats £700ish in total i’ve made in the last 4 times in a row. Nice.
