is bankroll management a skill needed for a poker player to succeed?

I haven't blogged in awhile and have good reason not to. The beginning of October was a terrible downswing, I lost 20k of my money in 2 weeks. Now for some of you that's nothing, but to a stud player, that's a big amount to win or lose in two weeks. If I won 20k every two weeks I'd be a millionaire in a year. Anyway it was lost live and online which is what sucks a lot about it, Because playing live is brutal enough without down swinging. I had tilted on top of it all during live poker and that's when I realized the most important trait of a poker player, isn't a winning strategy, but understanding how not to lose your money when not playing your optimal game. You could be the best player in the world, but if you tilted some days and lost half your bankroll, you'll never reach your full potential as a poker player in earning money.

The hardest part is getting the max out of your potential that you can get. If i plugged my leak of bankroll management while tilting, you could bet I'd have a ton more money. Probably one of the worst leaks to have as a poker player :p I'm fixing this still as I earn more and more money it becomes more important to protect your roll and not tilt it off. I learned all this, and played HU stud with a nosebleed HU HORSE player at foxwoods. We played online and watched each other play, which was cool and I learned a lot. The whole reason i played live was to meet up with him.

So you can imagine my poker has been quite busy lately, losing a lot and learning a ton

Mental strength is by far the #1 area that people have the biggest leak and the #1 area that gets worked on the least imo. We tend to work on every little aspect of our games when it comes to stuff like 3b pots or whatever, but I bet most people's winrates would dramatically increase if they worked just as hard on the mental side of things. Sorry to hear about your recent losses, but hopefully this inspires you to work even harder away from the table. We all talk about edges. I find that tilt control and envisioning ourselves as Tommy's "Professional" can give us the greatest edge of all if we can strengthen our discipline. Tis not an easy task by any means, but that's exactly why the edge is so great.

I am in the same boat atm, lost 1/2 my roll this month, and now moving back down to 100nl! Feels like a huge beat but I have to accept it. Implementing some stop loss strategies and quitting as soon as you feel angry, and only playing when you are in a fun and happy mood when you are ready to play some hands is the only solution in my opinion!

Also mental strength gives you a life edge... even more reason to practice it!

I hear about pros who say they need to get better at managing their losses. It just goes to show the skill gap there. You're unsatisfied with how you manage your losses but good enough to play that high. Many players never can make it to that point....
