July 4, 2007

A few years ago it was probably the low point in my poker career. In the beginning of 2007 I tried to learn cash games after being a tourney player since 2005. Needless to say it didn't go well, I had a Cardrunners membership but was still a huge dog playing 100+ BB pots. i had no experience paying deep and very little idea of what to do. Suffering a huge downswing I took some time off and went back to tournies. In 2007, it was also the first time I had paid taxes on my poker winnings. I didn't have enough to pay, I had to take a loan from my parents and had to grind tournies. Well during that time was where I experienced running worse than I thought possible. Anyway possible way I could lose, it happened.

I was close to broke, the variance was killing me, I owed money, and there was no end in sight. I decided to ask for a stake from some of the popular MTTers on 2+2. To my dismay I was denied by all. As mentioned before it was the low point of my poker career. Having close to $0 in my poker account I had to withdraw a few thousand from my investments to play with. The most frustrating part of the whole thing is i was running bad during the end game. Final 2 tables i had no shot at winning a coinflip, 60/40, etc. It really played with my confidence and I was pretty close to quitting poker.

Fortunately about a month later I won a tourney on Full Tilt for about 7k and was no longer in debt. Sticking with tournies I finished 2nd in the FTOPS HORSE event and won the $10r on Stars about a month later. From there I contacted what was then 3-bet.net about coaching and got hooked up with Jsnipes. With the fourth coming up and thinking back to how much different it could've been if I didn't win the $75 tourney on FT. I was playing underolled at the time and was so frustrated with variance I was sort of in a go for broke mode. One more month of running bad and there's no way I'm a DC coach and poker player. I'm probably a financial adviser somewhere working 50+ hour weeks and definitely not coaching baseball. It's funny how fast things can change.

On a completely separate note, I'm running a 2 mile race tomorrow. I'm hoping to run it in less than 13:30 should be interesting and am looking forward to it.

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher strates. The great teacher inspires.
