What a Rush....maybe

Well I finally broke today and made an account on Full Tilt…all that Rakeback and free training was too much to pass up…plus I wanted to try Rush Poker so I deposited enough to max out the bonus (Which I’ll more than likely have to recover off Stars but hey, fortuantely I live in a free country where I can use my debit card to throw money around between sites) and so far it’s been enjoyable except for one small detail…

FULL TILT’S SOFTWARE TILTS THE SHIT OUTTA ME!!!

So far I’ve had to uninstall and re-install it after every session becasue the bloody thing doens’t even have the courtesey of giving me an error message, just a blank Exclamation followed by a no-show…epic fail.

But the good news is I really enjoy Rush Poker, just as something new, and I think it’ll be great for helping me get some hands in during the month. Dunno if I’m profitable at it yet though, maybe a little nitty even for FR, but it’s something new and something I can split my time between, you never know I might have one of those 15k hand months I hear so much about at some point.

Nah, never happen :)

Thanks For The Music Tommy

As part of my March Goals I’ve been re-listening to Eightfold Path to Poker Enlightenment and to be honest something I figured out is that very little makes me more content than listening to well played music, especailly classical music (Rock gets a Pass here as it’s pretty much the only from of modern music that can be adapted to be played with a full orchestra such as This Example )

Probably why I like Guitar Hero too

But anyway classical music is something I like relaxing too as, fate would have it, I do have a piano background. I got so far on natural talent and then sadly with my time massively limited I had to make a choice between all the sport I was playing (I was literally playing 7 days a week, be it Football, Rugby, Winter Cricket Nets etc) and continuing on the piano, which I would have had to sink more time into, and I made my choice and to be honest, I don’t regret the choice, I only regret the consequences. I still played occasional simple songs like Christmas Carols but never got to being able to play things like the Fur Elise.

So listening to Episode 4 of EPTPE I was listening to the reciprocalized (is that a word???) versions of certain classics enjoying what Tommy was coming up with and then the episode concluded with an amazing rendition of Heart and Soul. If you haven’t heard it go to Tommy’s site and download it because, for me, it’s so uplifting to listen to and just instantly makes me feel better. Anyone who has a gift for playing an instrument/singing or something simlar truly does have a wonderful gift in my eyes. Thanks Tommy.

As for a poker update I’m just working away at 2/4 at the moment while engaging in 3 hour chats about a single situation…ethorn I’m gonna KILL you for bringing that hand up :) Ooops guess EPTPE hasn’t quite worked yet…MORE LISTENING :)

Medical imo and March Goals

Well Febraury came and went with about as much fanfare as I get from walking into work each day. poker play was virtually 0 what with cat, illness, cashouts and various other things gnawing at my shins.

BUT things may be turning around for me…ish.

Bascially long story short some company fucked up what I’d told them re: life insurance and decided I needed a medical based on my supposed history of Hypertension. (That history being that I was sent to see a consultant cardiologist who’s firm opinion was that the person who took my BP on my 6’ 4" 275lb (at the time) frame with a standard sized cuff needed their head seeing to)

So wind forward to today and tbh I expected the worst, I let my weight get out of control last year, and I’ve only recently begun to correct it. So obviously all the images beforehand flash through my head of being on beta-blockers etc for the rest of my life etc.

Fortunately the nurse who came was experienced, nice and had common sense. First things first large cuff….hooray!! Second thing second…my resting pulse rate is strong and steady and my BP while a tad high (like <10 above standard on both cystolic and diastolic…HA I KNOW BIG WORDS!!) is certainly not out of order considering my body size and what was even more comforting was she said I was confirmed at 6’ 4" so I’ve not shrunk :)

Of course the bad news came in the form of my weight which left me saying “Bet that makes my BMI look bad” and she said “yeah, but the BMI’s rubbish and we’re moving away from it and anyone who applied it to you would be a fool…becasue although you’re a bit…chubby (she said this while looking afraid I might stomp on her and eat her) there are people with the same BMI who could either be humongously overweight or built of solid granite”….YYYYYEEESSSSS!!! Doesn’t mean I still don’t have to lose A LOT of weight but at least it shouldn’t hinder me too much. She seemed happy enough I’m now exercising 5-6 days a week for minumium 45 mins so that’s ok I suppose. So we just see where that goess.

So March Goals:

1) 40 hours of poker. Still playing 2/4 and below for the moment to get rebuilt as I did sack all last month
2) Start iDiet. Italian based diet with a lot of fish, tomatoes, pasta etc and small portions often….we’ll see how that works.
3) Continue exercise 5-6 times a week. Sunday now special day where we walk somewhere (5 mile + walk) and have a nice Sunday meal.

Exercise to consist off:

i) Walk/Jog at least 3 times a week
ii) Harder gym workout 2-3 times a week (treadmill, Bike, Rower)
iii) Sunday Walk every week.

Contingency plan if break:

If I must have a take-away no more than 2 in the month and I have to walk to get it (hint closest take-away is over 3 miles away) and get picked up when there so it doesn’t go cold :)

Have a good March everyone

Public Service Announcement to those wishing to try Guitar Hero

Through the Fire and Flames is still hard on Easy becasue I’m rubbish :(

For those who can’t guess the XBox 360 is now wired into the projector and 5.1 surround system and is now being used as God intended….to play Rock Music at absurdly loud volumes while holding Plastic Guitars and reading the charts off an 84" screen!! And I downloaded Track and Field and Sonic because I’m old!!

I DID actually play poker today too and it’s rare I have a losing session and think to myself afterwards “Man I did well there” but I had similar thoughts today.

Somehow only being down 10BB today felt like a MAJOR acheivement. Sometimes not losing as much as you could is just as good as winning. Not gonna post too many hands as they’re pretty much strings of “Oh Noes” style hands but there were a couple of interesting ones.

Pre Flop: (1.5 SB) Hero is BB with K Diamond Q Diamond
1 fold, CO calls, 1 fold, SB calls, Hero raises, CO calls, SB calls

Flop: (6 SB) 5 Spade K Club 2 Spade (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, CO calls, SB calls

Turn: (4.5 BB) T Club (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, CO calls, SB calls

River: (7.5 BB) J Spade (3 players)
SB bets, Hero folds, CO calls

Final Pot: 9.5 BB

I think all things considered this is a pretty standard fold (if there is such a thing as a “standard fold of top pair” in Limit. I was 100% sure that he wouldn’t bluff into 2 players here although I have seen it.

Results-wise I was actually in 3rd place in the hand…can you guess how?

Ok 1 lol hand

Final Pot: 8 BB
BB shows 9 Diamond 6 Spade
Hero mucks K Heart J Spade
BB wins 7.875 BB
(Rake: $0.50)

I was planning to raise the turn but the 9 put the brakes on me. Probably shouldn’t have done but the player was new to me at the time and in the absence of a FD he hit the turn quite hard but yeah I admit I still should have raised the turn. Still funny though.

Ah well, aside from that I’m actually pretty happy atm. The XBox is awesome and I should have bought one ages ago and I’m relaxing nicely now. Hit me with your XBox ID if you want me to add you…assuming I know you of course :)

Woo YAY!!

I decided I was being a little ambitious jumping straight back into 3/6 after the problems it has given me in the past with controlling myself AND the fact that I’ve had a pretty damn rough time recently and had to withdraw that 30% of my roll.

So I dropped down to a combination of 1/2 and 2/4 for the moment and I’ll be playing those levels just to hopefully give my bankroll and confidence a bit of a boost and get back on an even keel before going back into the fire.

And once again poker went back to being fun. Admittedly the games were outrageous, all game created, all had 2-3 fish who I’m pretty sure were paste eaters and the games oh so passive.

Why is it no-one ever gets what they deserve when they do this BS slowplay? Hit your 4-outer and slowplay it so I can miss my 10-outer. The other dowside to his play obviously being that no-one at 2/4 and below is capable of bluff raising the river so bet-3-betting the river is completely out whereas I may have been tempted to do so on the turn but of course that never passes their minds as they congratulate themselves on being EXPERT.

Oh wait, they occasionally do get what they deserve :)

Very satisfying this was too.

But overall a bit more content although still not back to my best, I missed a couple of value bets/raises imo so got to improve there a bit.

In other news MY XBOX ARRIVES TODAY!!! Pwnage of the highest order. Yes loyal reader, all 3 of you, I’m actually entering the modern age of gaming…it’s only taken 15 years.

I'm Back!!

And Stars didn’t welcome me back :(

Well bound to happen :)

Short Story is, cat is much better now, although more cuddly now, but in order to help my mum get over a few things and pay for the vet bills I’ve had to withdraw about 30% of my roll from Stars which was a bit of a kick in the balls. Hopefully the VIp increase and Stellar bonuses etc can lead me back to where I was in a decent amount of time.

First session back start well, felt like I was hand reading ok and playing decently although one of my tables was the shits as it had one guy who feels like capping me is his purpose in life it seems (although I can’t blame him and he plays pretty well) in position on me followed by marchinvest also on the table which felt pretty crappy.

But anyway things got off to a flying start and included a situation with me flopping quads:

Final Pot: 13.167 BB
CO mucks A Heart 8 Spade
Hero shows Q Heart Q Club

(Rake: $2.00)

I also got in a couple of nice hands although there seemed to be a disturbing trend of the board coming pretty dang horrid:

Weee call and raise the…ok f**k off :)

Sadly things went a bit sour and I had to cut the session about 200 hands in:

MI 3-outers me in a 15BB pot. Not much I could do here, just call down and pray he got overzealous with KQ but can’t say that turn raise had me feeling good.

I’m wondering how over-zealous I am here. First off the pre-flop 3-bet is wide, especially if the BB is willing to cap me wide (hint: he is). Once bet 3-bet on the flop I don’t think I can let go although it’s close, I pretty much should only beat a pretty badly overplayed flush draw but the pot’s pretty big. I have outs non-set hands though so i think I’ve got to at least see the river. What I do there is up for debate but this stinks of a “fuck it” call.

The guy who OR’d 53s pre….60/10. Yeah I know. That river’s just atrocious and I gave very serious though to x/f here. Might have been wise but he seemed capable of at least 1 bluff and I had induced. meh.

Hmm not sure I like AQ here I mean….uh wtf?

I knew the guy I was up against here was aggressive but I didn’t know he was THAT OTT. Obviously I chage play and cap him knowing that in the future.

If I give him a range for 3-betting a UTG raise of ATs+, KQ, AJo+ and 88+ then I’m a 48/52 dog on the flop despite hitting top pair so I think my line is ok, especailly if he’s aggro enough to 3-barrell. Obv if he’s 3-betting 33 then change up.

My last hand of the night. When this guy went all in with his big 11% equity and I was stuck in a war with MI and others on the other tables I knew I was slipping and decided to call it a day.

On the plus side my mum didn’t need as much as we’d thought so I’ve put some aside to save for the US and some more on an XBox 360 :) Mmm retail therapy.

By this time next week I should be belting out Plastic Rock with all the dignity and skill of the type of person who does that sort of thing….oh I see.

Ah well never mind. About 23BB down on the session overall, not the best start but could have been worse and there will be plenty more time to get some play in this year.

Take Care All

An Awful Day

Well working in accounts month end tends to be a bad time but today was a day I want to soon forget.

Not only the fact that thanks to a random test by our IT department I couldn’t leave work until 7pm tonight when I got home I find that one of my cats, the other having gone walkabout as he does occasionally, has had to be taken to the vet by my mum and we fear the worst to be honest.

He’ll be X-rayed and scanned tomorrow but I’m preparing myself for bad news. He’s had a very good life, they both have, but as outdoor cats this is always a potential hazard. All I want now is either him back health and happy or we’ll let him go. We’re not going to let him suffer.

So yeah, bad day, and here’s to a better tomorrow.

February Goals

Well it’s been a very quiet start to the New Year, mainly due to me working off my 10 day break in December and getting my tooth pulled out of my head.

Nevertheless Britain wasn’t built on whinging (until the 1970’s anyway) so it’s time to buckle down to it and set some targets for the month

1) 7500 VPPs. It’s a decent, non-psycho target and will keep me nicely in line for a potential run at Supernova later in the year

2) Watch/Listen to EPTPE again. My main weakness as is well documented is that I’m a bit of a self-depreciating emo (ok maybe a little harsh but you get the picture :) )when it comes to things going a bit wrong. This is something to continuously work on leading to….

3) Grow a set and get used to the stakes so I can take a shot at 5/T. Yes a bit tongue in cheek this one and 1000BB is probably an excessive roll for a part time punter like me but the rule I set for myself is “Comfortable at previous level or no-no to go-go”. I’d just like to be able to gogogogo soon.

4) Book holiday time off in May so the UK invasion of the US can begin. Beware, I may or may not bring a top hat and I don’t think even the might of the US can stand before a British Man in a Top Hat.

Oh btw I’ve done 4 already ;)

5) Epic pwnage

Yeah they sound good. Let the Games Begin

Tooth Gone...Part 2

Well I’m now happily sitting here with my Ibuprofen and a drink having had my wisdom tooth pulled out.

Not a long procedure and I’ll be fine in 24 hours or so (although probably down a pillow). but for now it’s soup, occasional drink and taking out any pain or rage I’m feeling on Computer sprites.

Had all sorts of fun and games yesterday, first of all my tooth appointm, ent was moved back until today and then just as I’m settling down for the evening my mum decides elbowing the door is the way forwards and it swells up like someone stuck a cricket ball under there….gogo midnight trip to the local A&E where if a minor injury is dealt with in under 4 hours you’re good.

Fortunately she’s medical, specifically part of her qualifications being in radiography, so she got seen quickly but yeesh. Follow that up with the tooth thing it’s been a really rexlaing last 24 hours…no really.

A Late Welcome to 2010

Happy New Year everyone.

Randomly I noticed recently that my blog was nominated for best user blog on DC so thanks for everyone who put forward the nomination, I’m very touched that my ramblings are enjoyed.

Anyway…

So what have I been doing in 2010? Not a lot, really is the honest answer. The temperatures in the UK plummtted to -15 Degrees C so we had a little snow…

Obviously this shut the entire country down becasue we’re woeful at dealing with stuff like that. I got to work from home which initially excited me until I realised I hated it. I think I’d have been happier if I wasn’t stuck on my desktop and could work from a laptop but having to work on a desktop meant it was bascially the same as being at work just with no-one to talk to and the distraction of knowing there a DVD Player and a projector less than 10 feet away. Consequently my work took longer than it should and I was in no mood to be sitting at any poker tables.

I did start a Video Playthrough of Dungeon Keeper though, nothing like being completely evil in a PC game for stress relief…hmmm wonder if I really want to say that…ah well.

I have been thinking about what I want to achieve in 2010 since 2009 was a real breakout year and, aside from a few dings to th ol’ pride near the end, pretty much everything I’s set myself at the start of the year was accomplished (The SN failure was a mid-year “add-on”)

Now while multiplying my “bankrolled” stakes by 10 again would be great this year methinks the Boomer doth expect too much if that’s a set goal. Additionally attaining Supernova this year while more than reachable may be reliant on me playing higher stakes.

What I do want to do is start enjoying poker more again. Towards the back end of last year it really began to feel like a 2nd job and I have my 1st job for earning money and occaisionally stressing me out thank-you very much. Additionally last year’s mini-blow-up at the end highlighted that I’m still not on top of my tilt goals.

So on that front I’ve made a little bet with BBB.

1) If I make an emo DC post – $5 fine
2) If I b*tch like a whiny little girl on Skype – $5 fine
3) Chat-Tilt – $5 fine
4) Emo Blog post – $10 fine as that takes twice as much effort and is twice as useless since I’d probably delete it out of shame anyway within 5 mins.

This will run all through 2010. It’s for my own good in the long run. If I can eliminate the worst side of my personality from my game then I truly think I’m capable of breaking into mid-stakes and having anotehr breakout year, if I can’t then I’m going to get stuck.

I think I’ll be watching Eightfold Path again a few times this year, I currently only have a 1200 emo-post roll.

Would be Nice Goals:

1) Supernova
2) Be Playing 10/20 by year end
3) Have Visited the US and not ruined the image either I or the British have :)

Have a Great 2010 all
