Back To The Trap House

So, until I head out to Vegas in January I decided to stay at my sisters place. Since I broke up with my GF and got off of the lease I couldn’t stay there. My dad is going through his 2nd divorce so I didn’t want to go home either. I decided its very +EV to get a month of bonding with my 2 nephews and my brother in law. Also my sister is an awesome cook and for the past half year I had been eating like shit so this was really a no brainier.

Despite all the negativity I get from my dad, sister and everyone else about dropping out of school to be a degen my brother in law is the only person who said to go for it. He encouraged me to do it back in January and once I took his advice I went on a sick heater in live and online tournaments and took about 14K in just over 2 months!!

Let me describe my Bro in law, who we call Mook, in a couple of funny stories. He one time got so black out drunk in Vegas that he ran up 50K at a black jack table only to lose it back plus a few thousand more. He didn’t remember a single thing of course and his friends had to tell him what had happened. The last time he went to Vegas with my sister she woke up to a knock on her bed room door at Mandalay Bay to 2 police officers. Apparently Mook had gotten so wasted he found himself in the drunk tank LOL. When he was 16 within a span of 2 weeks he got a DUI and found a way to burn down a log cabin with his buddies. He is a regular sports bettor and all around degen gambler in general. Despite all of this he takes great care of my sister and nephews and never has put them in tough spots financially. He always works hard but when the weekends come around he likes to have a good time.

Doesn’t really make for a very good poker player. Well, he had been pretty clean and sober the past few months until I rolled through. He decided that a few beers here and there with me isn’t such a bad Idea. Well I couldn’t agree more. Last night we decided to go grab some Mexican food together for the family as well as some drinks. He was in the gambling mood as well. We had a few shots of tequila and a couple of beers at the restaurant. On the way home we decided a 12 pack wasn’t a bad idea either.

As we sat down at the computer we were about 6 drinks in each. He logged on to Bodog where he plays and I got onto Full Tilt. I decided since I wasn’t really playing seriously that I would drop down in stakes and play 1 Table of 25 PLO at a deep ante table. After all, I have sat in on my friends coaching sessions and listened to him teach for about 10 hours. I had read his notes a few times and listened to him talk about PLO many times. And my skills in Hold em should prevent me from doing anything retarded. Surely nothing could go wrong.

Welp, 6 more drinks and 10 buy ins later in the span of about 100 or so hands really showed me how big of an idiot I really am. I mean here I am making huge strides in my game, having a great month only to take 10 steps in the wrong direction. On top of that I really shouldn’t even be playing PLO at all since I don’t have any of the fundamentals down. It’s just so frustrating to feel good about your game and do something so dumb that could have been avoided completely. I guess it just shows that I still have a lot to work on outside of the game.

It sucks and I feel kind of shitty about it but its a lesson to be learned for sure. I am going to Vegas in just a few weeks, the worlds capital for traps and pitfalls. If I can’t avoid doing stupid shit like this online then what the hell will happen to me in Vegas? I mean, I’ve been gambling in Vegas since I was 19 thanks to a fake ID. I’ve only been there once to really party and all the other times it’s just been to play poker. For the most part I have avoided all the traps except for the occasional drink and drunken evening. I’m just going to have to be extra careful I guess…….
