notes on PLO fundies 2 on LFTV
I've been sick the last 3 days so I've just been watching a shit load of videos and taking notes :)
Preflop Strategy
3 Key Components of a Starting Hand
- High Card Strength
- 'Connectedness'
- 'Suitedness'
Key elements of Hand Strength
Flop Equity Distribution (on a spectrum from "polarized" to "smooth")
- Polarized: KK72r (very strong sometimes, very bad most of the time)
- Intermediate: 8c 7c 7s 6s, JT97r, As Ks Jh 9d
- Smooth: Qc Jc Td 9d (smooth transition from good to bad flops and very obvious)
Mix of Component Strengths (c,h,d,s)
- Single strong component, no backup - KK72r, t987r, As8s6d2h (does one thing well)
- Single strong component, mediocre backup - KhKd7h2c, Tc9c8h7s, As8s6d4d
- Multiple strong components - AcAsJcTs, KhQhJdTd (very good at doing more than one thing)
- Multiple decent components - JsJdTs9h, AhQhJq9d
- Multiple mediocre components - 8d7d7s6s, 9d8d6s4s
Nuttiness
- Hands that mostly make the nuts/nut draws - KK72s As8s7d6c, QJT9r
- Intermediate hands - JsJcTs9c, AcJc9h6h
- Hands that mostly make the non-nuts-non-nut draws - 8h7h7d6d, Td7d5s4s
Key Parameters of Post-Flop Situations
- position
- # of opponents
- SPR
Position
- Hands that are relatively easier to play when OOP and IP - polarized and/or nutty hands (nuts or nothing hands) - you won't make as much money OOP than IP however, but thats standard in all poker.
- Hands that benefit the most from Position:
- Multiple mediocre component hands 8s7c7s6c
- non-nut hands - non-nut flush draw + top pair
- weak and/or intermediate hands in general
Number of Opponents
Hands that prefer less players:
- Multiple decent/mediocre component hands
- non-nut hands
Hands that prefer more players:
- Single strong component hands
- Nutty hands
Hands that don't care how many:
- Multiple Strong component hands (AcAdJdTc, AAKKds, KQJTds etc)
SPR
Hands that like Single Raises Pots:
- Polarized hands such as KK72r that have a difficult time finding additional flops to stack off on as stacks get shallower
- Nutty hands that benefit from implied odds/opponents making near nut hands with deeper stacks (ie. set over set, flush over flush)
Hands that like Re-raised pots:
- hands with smooth distribution of equities; these hands that find it easy to hit 20%+ of flops hard enough to stack off in a standard 3bet pot (i.e. 10% of stacks in preflop, headsup/3way)
- In particular, hands that benefit from promoting the value of weaker components by reducing the SPR:
- Multiple decent component hands such as :
- Good broadways
- Medium double suited connectores/connected pairs
- This is because Top two. mid/bottom set, non-nut flushes/flush draws. middle pairs (as a piece of cumulative equity) all are worth more in SHALLOWER POTS where SPR is low
Preflop hand groupings
group 1: Unpaired rainbow hands
Top Two pair is best you can get usually, hopefully you can get straight back up. AKQJr are playable but they are tricky in the sense they have no suitedness. You need to flop straights or big wraps on a rainbow board. See a flop cheap, try flop well and progress from there. all hands even QJT9 and T987r don't 3bet them, see a flop cheap. Usually fold unpaired rainbow hands unless have big cards and a sense of connectedness.
group 2: Unpaired single suited
The higher the big cards that are suited the better. The more connected the better.
group 3: Unpaired double suited
these are middle strength hands, raise them when they are connected and have big cards in them like JT98 ds
group 4: double paired rainbow
Nont many starting hands, set mininig or looking for big pairs
group 5: double paired single suited
overpair + draw is good
group 6: double paired, double suited
hit top set or big high card flush
group 7: paired rainbow
never 3bet rainbow hands, try hit top set
group 8: paired double suited
3bet light with these hands to balance out your double paired doublesuited hands and to reduce SPR. in 3bet pots flopping a set is a monster
group 9: paired single suited
99 down is not worth very much, try play bigger pocket pairs with bigger flush draws, pocket pairs make up around 1/3 of your hands, so don't play the smaller pocket pairs for set value as you will often only get action when you are oversetted
Important Preflop Ranges to Consider
- EP and LP openning ranges
- Facing a raise in position
- Facing a raise OOP
- Facing a 3bet
