notes from balugawhale 3bet seminar

  • CONTEXT
3bets pots are like playing a short stack game because the SPR is lower, therefore your skill and position advantage are negated.
    Less fold equity
    More showdowns
    Equity matters more
    Develops your image
  • PLAYER TYPES
    Passive-Bad - most common
    Aggressive-Bad - most rare
    Aggressive-Good - most difficult
  • RESPONSES TO 3-BETTING:
    (passive) don't do it!
Means calling alot and check folding many boards
Importance of Dead Money (adding Value)
    Difficulties of Playing OOP (equity)
    Problems with Set mining
  • RESPONSES TO 3-BETTING:
    Tight (usually right)
Let other people pay off badly against us
we don't mind folding for 3bb's 5 times, when we can get villain to stack off for 100bbs when we have a stong hand
We'll make small mistakes many times, yet they will make one big mistake and we will come out on top
  • RESPONSES TO 3-BETTING:
    (Aggressive)
TIght response is alot aggressive, so its a slight misnomer.
    Aggressive responses seizes the initiative
we dont need to be 3betting light if people are stacking off light, we can just 3bet for value and stack off with those hands
understand frequency, if you know he's a reg, you can target them
  • WE 3-BET IN POSITION
vs Passive bad or Aggressive bad (the fish)
We need a wider value range
No Polarization (Just big value hands, fold the junk)
    Capitalize on Dead Money
No image necesary - we don't need to build image. Image is only necessary to make our opponents make mistakes, but if our opponents make mistakes naturally, we don't need to think about image whatsoever
  • vs Aggressive Good (regs and tags)
Polarize your range (A6o, k8s on one end, AA on the other)
Top of Folding Range (A6o on BTN for example) for example If you were going to open a hand, but cannot call with it, you can turn these hands into your 3betting as a bluff range.
Develops Image. 3betting strong stuff and junk, now once our image is developed, we can then change our hands into adding in the top of our folding range and widening our value range
  • WE 3-BET OOP
    vs Passive-Bad or Aggro-Bad
    same general philosophy as before
wide value range, capitalize on dead money
  • vs Aggro-good
They make the mistake of defending against 3bets IP too lightly
Depolarize our range, but widen our value range, more big cards, more pairs. No junk OOP
When they start to adjust, we need to start to balance more
How to Balance? Add hands that play well in 3bet pots (high cards, pairs,  A8s, k9s, QTs)
  • WE ARE FACING A 3-BET OOP
Choose your response based on Game Dynamics
Evaluate villains frequency (be careful with stats!) Think about his frequency against YOU in TODAYS session. Trust more what you see in your session, rather than on the numbers
Calling  in 3-bet pots OOP sucks, so decide to 4-bet or fold
4betting as a bluff, big cards with blockers, make your 4bet 26.5 bbs (unexploitable size TY prof plotkin) shove pp's 66-JJ
The AK/QQ issue - if they have enough air, we can play, if the don't have enough air, its ok to just fold preflop! But if there is alot of dead money in the pot, its ok to 4bet ship it in
  • WE ARE FACING A 3-BET IP
When we raise on the BTN, be aware of who is in the blinds
Adjust your raise sizes the later you get by making your steals smaller
Choose your response based upon villains tendencies
the deeper you are the more cards you can play
the shallower the stack, the tighter you should play
play more IP with AK, AQ, 88 etc
Keep the worse hands in his range in the pot
value of pairs and equity distribtion
  • SQUEEZING: A TABLE DYNAMIC ISSUE
Change of context, the percieved range of the squeezer is wider
this means we should expect less fold equity, thus we should go for wider value
We are going for thin value with a wider range, and this is compensated by the extra dead money in the pot
The squeezers effect on the value of different actions, for example if we have QQ on the BTN and we know that there is a habitual squeezer in the blinds, we should often opt to flat behind and hope for a light squeeze then back raise
Do not over estimate the width of someone's squeezing range
Reacting to squeeze (4bet for value, don't call light unless ou are going to be aggro postflop, if they have alot of air in their range you can flat and raise the flop small more)
pairs play well in 3bet pots. If someone is 3betting you alot, you can get away with playing pp's in 50/50 spots IN POSITION - we won't win all the time, but we will get value with our bigger hands later, and we can sometimes win on later streets when it's clear we are ahead
  • 3-BETTING AND STACK SIZE
Shallower stacks creates less fold equity which means we get to showdown more often
Deeper stacks effect our card value tremendously, more fold equity and fewer showdowns
Big suited hands and medium-high pairs play better because they can make top set 77-JJ
Low pairs and Big offsuite cards and low SC's go down in value
  • A QUICK WORD ON 3-BETTING HU
Beware of 3-betting too much, beware of unreasonable positive mental reinforcement (money is what matters, not winning the most pots)
Pairs play better in 3bet pots, 3-bet/5-bet shove with most PP's
If you are getting 3bet alot, min raise more and make smaller bets preflop
    wider value range pre
