Satellite to the EPT Snowfest

I’ve recently win a 500FPP satellite to play the 22€+R satellite to the EPT Snowfest.We was 80 players for one seat to the EPT Snowfest + 1000€ for the winner.I was doing well, without any rebuy I was the third stack of the tournament.

I’ve noticed that a guy just near me was a maniac, but probably the biggest maniac I’ve ever seen.The guy did more than 40 rebuy during this tournament.At some point, the rebuy chips was lower than the blinds, but he still rebuy! He gave me a lot of chips, like this one:

It was in the early beginning of the tournament but he puts its bet so fast and I was sure that I didn’t have an ace with its donkbet, so I’ve called.Pretty happy with my read!

Just before the rebuy period ends, I’d an big opportunity to double up, so I took it but unfortunalely, a big donk who spend his time to put some big stack all in UTG called me with QJ.Of course he made a backdoor straight.

After this ugly hand, I’ve tryed to coming back, but it was impossible, especially without any rebuy.So I’ve finished 36th, but I think that its a pretty nice result for my beginning in EPT satellite, without rebuy.

The guy who made 40 rebuy finally get is ticket to the EPT Snowfest, but he probably spend more in satellite ticket than the original buy in of the EPT!

What a good feeling that is finally! I was able to ship the Pstars 55$ 40k Guar for 10.5k no choppin tonighttt. Honestly the money is nice but its such a great feeling to win a tournament again after so long and so many close calls over the last 8-12 months. I also FTd the 30r 6max for 4th place, disapointing but had a tough ft that I was going to have to run well vs. I reshoved 67h from the bb vs blackfourz sb raise and ran into 66 shoving 19bbish. Not the hand to run into there vs the cl. That paid 1.5k so overall a nice day finally.

Back to the 40k ft, I came in sitting 5/9 and had an early roller coaster going from 3rd to 9th at one point sitting with 20bbish after trying to do something to seperate myself from the pack. There were no big names there and I felt that everyone really was going to make an effort to let people get knockd out to money up for themselfs. It just didn’t happen and I was forced to sit back and wait for a hand. 1010 finally showd up and restole an ep raise and then pickd up a pot or two to put myself back in ok shape. A few players donked around some chips and we got down to 5 quick after 30min of no one going out. I was able to pick my spots well and eventually got 3 handed where we looked at the numbers all with identical stacks basically. I had an edge with 50bb so passed on the chop much to the disapointment of the other 2 players. One of them more vocal than the other. About 5 hands later after i’d been 3b twice already I woke up with AQo outta the bb after the sb opnd. I 3b and we got it in AQ vs 77 and binkd an ace on the flop, go me finally. HU lasted about another 30min getting it in AJd vs A6o once and he binkd a 6. I was able to put some good value bets out and wasnt caught bluffing in my two big pots which was nice and finally got it in AJd vs 22 for the win turning Jc :) Hopefully this will bring me some serious momentum for the future because it feels great to win something. Tomorrow I have to seriously finish my tax papers and add everything up from my live scores last year. I’ll hopefully hit the gym in the late morning and go from there.

I really hope I can spiral this into something big the next few weeks because im at a standstill for cash games I feel like right now and really need a big score to get the coaches I’d like for the bigger games. A 25k score would do me very well in the next 2 weeks before the Foxwoods Poker classic and then onto the NAPT for the series there. Hopefully the start of big things to come.

Sup- pose a certain stock exhibits a true (geometric) random walk, by which I mean there is a 50–50 chance that the stock is going up 1 percent or down 1 percent every minute. If you buy this stock, are you most likely—in the long run and ignoring financing costs—to make money, lose money, or be flat?

I am interested to see what you guys think the answer is?

Sorry about the lack of updates folks. I’ve been on kind of a small poker vacation, and I’ve had some IRL stuff going on. Nothing too juicy, mostly boring and mundane so I won’t waste your time rambling about it. Just wanted to check in, say hello, and say that I’ll resume blogging soon, when I have some 5/10 under my belt and some hands to yap about. I know I know, I’m a lazy fucker. There’s a reason I have friends that are willing to prop bet me that I can’t play 30k hands in a month.

Well I pretty much got my ass handed to me on the micro limit tables last night. Between the suckouts on the river and getting my c bets constantly 3 bet by a different passive fish I lost a total of 3 BI’s. Including stacking off during a game creation game sigh………..Im not used to most of my profit coming from showdown. Im thinking I will have to tighten up and play TAG for a while and pick some different spots. ……….So with that said Lesson learned and I just have to remeber that my goal each session is not to make money but to make the correct poker decsion which will make me money. Time to dust off and try again!!!

Surprise, I’m not busted even though haven’t posted for a while! In fact, I’ve been running very well. May a little too well.

I’m up about 20 buy-ins already this month in just about 7000 hands. I feel that I’ve won almost all coinflips or close, and my good hands have almost always come out on the top after river. I don’t feel that I’ve played badly, or sucked out huge, I’ve just been on the good side of the coin. This makes me feel a little uneasy. My all-in ev adjusted graph for this month looks like this:

What makes me feel uneasy, is that I’m almost waiting for my luck to turn, and start diving. I feel that I haven’t earnt my money, even though I haven’t really done that much wrong. All this run-good just makes me feel somehow weird.

I don’t really have any big point here on this, this just mixes my feelings. Anyone else feeling the same when running above EV?

Back to the drawing board...

OK, let’s talk about how GOOD the day started lol. I woke up this morning planning on being productive as I said in my blog yesterday. I started cleaning my kitchen, when I found one of Courtney’s work checks. It was buried in a pile of papers and it was three months old. It was 278 bucks. I was very excited lol. Couldn’t need it more at this time.

I finished cleaning the kitchen and did the dishes (which took me about a half hour). Went to the gym. Worked out fairly hard. Came home and noticed that my raspberry bush and strawberries have started to grow. Yeah we’ve had some warm weather for like the last two months. In the fall, I had ground up the leaves in my yard and used them as mulch for my garden. I needed to rake most of them off so my plants could start growing. So I did that and bought soil and stuff. So that’s what I did until about 3pm. I decided to do that instead of poker because today the weather was pretty decent and I didn’t want to put it off and it be crappy outside for the next month. Plus it made me happy.

Then I took Courtney to work and came home and started playing poker. Here’s how it went…

Another awful night at the tables has convinced me that I need to do some serious work on my game. Again. It happens like this continuously. It’s a circle that I have been on ever since I started playing poker. Horrible downswing, study, grind a small profit for a while, then another horrible downswing. Rinse and repeat for the rest of my life…

Today was a probably 25% bad play and 75% horrible luck. Of course when I loaded up my tables, 3 other regs decided to load right on top of me. What a freakin joke. I run so well against them too. Here are some examples.

Hand 1: This happens probably 90% of the pots I am in with him. This is just one example. This guy has an ungodly win rate against me. It has become the norm, so nothing surprises me any more. I knew exactly how this was going to end.

Addicted to EASHL

Been playing a ton of EASHL lately. It’s the online league associated with NHL 2010. I’ve joined a team from 2+2 and after being awful the first few nights we’re now around .500. It’s been fun to see the progress.

Unfortunately this has cut into my grinding time. I’ve been playing well lately and decided to take a 5 BI shot at 200 but lost 3 quick BIs and spewed my last one way so I cut it short. Back to 100.

Practice has started and my arm is already sore from throwing BP, hopefully advil can get me through another season.

Tobias has passed Gob as my favorite character in Arrested Development. Him being an analrapist just put it over the top. I’m on the last episodes of Season 3 right now and need a new TV to show to watch.

So I just got a new card protector off ebay. Its a panda eating bamboo. I am quite fond of pandas. I have a panda hat, panda avatar, and a panda debit card. I used to have a big ass glass fish as a card protector, and it shattered on the floor when I was in Vegas, which sucked because I had had it since I was a little kid. Hadn’t gotten a new one since, b/c I’ve been looking for the right one, and haven’t played any live poker in a long time. But I finally found the perfect card protector and I’m pretty stoked for it to get here. I’ll be that crazy panda kid who plays a lot of poker. But who doesn’t love pandas. They are the coolest looking bear there is. They’re hilarious. And those eyes are just grrreat. and they’re the only bear I would want to hang out with, besides the fact it might try to eat me or something. but a panda cub i’d hang out with all day.

The WSOP circuit is coming to St. Louis, so I’ll probably hit up the cash games that run on the side during it. I kind of miss live poker, and the social aspect. Having a dealer, people to talk to and laugh with, and chips to play with cannot be replaced by online poker. Also, theres nothing better than amassing a massive stack of chips, and feeling unstoppable. My record at Lumiere was amassing a 2500 dollar stack from 300 dollars. It was pretty. A 500 dollar chip, a fat stack of 100 dollar chips, some greens, then a pyramid of reds. I played for 14 hours straight, and it felt amazing to have such a big stack at a 1/3 game. That being said, I almost definately make more money online, but I can still make a pretty decent profit at live. I think I could really dominate the game now. 1/3 in St. Louis is a joke. Equivalent of .05/.10 online. Suuuuch an easy game. I killed it the week I turned 21 for like 4 grand. Thus began my poker journey, and its been going strong since. Hopefully there will be some juicy 2/5 games going during the WSOP circuit. I might play in a few events too, but I suck at MTTs. So we’ll see how I’m feelin.

I’m thinking about trying out 200NL rush a few times a week, slowly easing into it, during peak player times like Friday and Saturday night. My bankroll is ginormous, though I’m constantly withdrawing. I’ve withdrawn 10,500 in the past few weeks and it still is at 21,500. 20,000+ is the only time I feel comfortable playing 1/2, yes I’m that big of a bankroll nit. Being insanely overrolled makes me not care when I lose multiple buyins. And makes me play much, much better. I was planning on withdrawing the entire thing for various reasons that I won’t go into here, its kind of a mess, before I move to Cali. Then reloading it. But I might actually hold off to moving to Cali for a while, because I feel like I’d have to take off too much of my bankroll for the move. I want to feel very, very comfortable with my finances before I move. I’m pretty comfortable right now – I have a ton of money saved up. But, moving money around is gonna be a hassle. Money is basically the only source of stress in my life right now. If I continue to beat the game and make 5000-10,000 a month, then money will cause me very little stress. Good news is I’ve made 4000 dollars in the first 9 days of March. I crushed again today, and the poker gods have been treating me well. I’m running great, and its times like these where poker is truly a gift. No matter how big a downswing I run into, I know that an equally large upswing is due to happen sometime in the future if i keep playing. Variance has a way of evening out over 100s of thousands of hands. Right now I’m running great, and quite happy with the success I’ve had this month.

Making a bunch of money has made me a money nit. I don’t really spend any more than I used to-unless its on poker related expenses, such as a new computer which I am buying fairly soon, or a big tv to play on which I am also buying pretty soon. The money I make is only put towards building a bigger bankroll so that I can feel more comfortable playing higher stakes. And will now be used to allow me to live in an amazing city – San Diego. I eat out more than I used to – pad thai with tofu is my favorite. Bangkok gardens in Columbia FTW. I love Thai food. And I eat a ridiculous amount of Chipotle – a great vegetarian and vegan friendly fast food place found all over the country.

The best thing about having a big bankroll is that I’m not losing money that I need to survive. I have already made more than enough money to live on. And I live fairly cheaply – I don’t spend much money at all besides on food and rent and insurance and taxes. So when I make mistakes, lose some buyins, its not the end of the world. Just a small scratch in an otherwise ginormous bankroll. I’m not gonna lie, January really sucked. I had never had a losing month until January. I only lost 2 grand, but that also means I didn’t win any money, and it felt bad. But I’ve probably had 7 months where I booked solid wins, and 1 month where I lost. So thats a pretty good track record eh. If I ever get to the point where I’m crushing midstakes or highstakes games, I plan on donating quite a bit of money to charity. Even crushing low stakes I can make a substantial amount of money. The best thing about this is I get to deduct this money from the ridiculous taxes I have to pay on my winnings. And this way I’m not just playing a game for a living – I’m also helping others at the same time. Which is a life goal of mine, and why I’m going to grad school to get a pHD in psychology in a few years, to hopefully further the psychology field in some small way. But in the meantime – I want to beat the game of poker!

I’ve been thinking a lot about bankrolls and whatnot the past few days, as I have several friends who tend to deviate from solid bankroll management. I have come up with a way to think about a bankroll through talking with them and just really thinking about why I am such a bankroll nit. First and foremost – a bankroll is your lifeline as a professional poker player. Without it, you are unable to grind, and therefore unable to provide yourself with money to pay your bills. A bankroll can be instantly destroyed via moving up to stakes you are not rolled for, but thats about it. I have witnessed the destruction of poker players due to lack of bankroll management, and it is not pretty. But it is for this reason I am such a bankroll nit. I used to be a huge phish back in highschool, would play pit games, blow money in poker, and had no concept of bankroll management. I know the old me is still somewhere inside, and I am scared as hell to let him out. Even 1 year ago I didn’t really have solid BR management. have 20+ grand, I only played 2/4 a handful of times. I never played above 2/4, except for live cash games, but live cash games are completely different than online. I realize I am scared, scared of letting an irresponsible self out, scared of losing more money than I feel comfortable losing, and letting this affect my game. I have read stories of countless poker players spiraling out of control. No one ever plans to spiral out of control and blow their bankroll – but it happens. I realize I could take 5 buyin shots at 1/2, and once I lose 5 buyins just grind out 100NL again until I want to take another shot. This should only positevely affect me, and if I start off from the get go winning, I would have a much, much higher hourly. But I am still scared. And hope to overcome this fear fairly soon. I think I can beat 200NL, and I think I’m going to take a shot this week. Going in with the spirit that I won’t care if I lose 1000 dollars. That I will be able to make that back in 20-30 hours playing 100NL. We’ll see how it goes.

Well I’m off to bed, wakin up early tomorrow for a long day of grinding. I have a few new plans for tomorrow. A) I’m going to min raise every button. I think this will be a profitable strategy for many reasons, but mainly b/c ppls 3bets won’t be as effective, and ppl will most likely call too much OOP. And I think people at 100NL will react poorly to this. B) I’m going to stop 4bet bluffing a ton IP, because I am losing less since I’m minraising when people 3bet, and I feel my 4bet bluffs are not profitable against a bunch of the rush poker monkeys. They may be slightly +EV against some. Or slightly -EV against others who 5bet shove light. But either way, they increase variance a great deal, and it tilted me today when I got 5 bet shoved on multiple times in a row. I can outplay people postflop, and 4bet bluffing seems to cause me to tilt when it doesn’t work out for some reason. It may be nitty to stop altogether, which is why I am combining it with min raising buttons, and I will still 4bet bluff against specific opponents who 3bet way too much out of the blinds. C) I’m not going to 5bet shove AQ, so I’m going to flat with it a lot more than 3 betting it so I don’t get stuck with someone 4 betting me, unless some guy is a huge monkey. But I have gotten myself in some shitty situations by 5 bet shipping too light in rush poker. I think this will have more of a positive affect than a negative effect. So yup, those are my plans for tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes!

Day of Run Good

Today was fng biblical dudes. I mean frogs and locusts epicness. Over the course of four hours of play I was dealt AA at least ten times. I was dealt KK at least five times. These hands I won small pots with.

Then I made sets when dealt pocket pairs, I would estimate, about 40% of the time. It was truly amazing how well I hit hands today. The sets I did get paid with as three times, three, I had set over set. Today had to be by far the best results I have ever had in terms of bbs per hour. I also turned the nut straight with tens. I just could not lose a hand today, it was incredible. On top of that the little things went well also, like I would river top pair in a small pot continually. If I can get pokertracker to do what I ask of it for once I will add the stat.

I know I have run poorly sometimes, but today was a bit of redemption, and I wanted to set it down in the blog so I dont always have that excuse for losing. I hope those of you who have never had a day like today do soon, its just really encouraging to know that, while you will have days that will make you want to rip your eyes out, you will also have days like I had today. We are not talking big dollars here since I am still at 25nl, but still, alot of fun.

I dont take anything from it, as I know today was just the pleasant side of variance, but maybe the smart thing to do is to let it seep into my confidence, as if I played real well. Its important for me to know I can be lucky. Btw I am also on the verge of cashng this $3 rebuy on stars, Im short but just got table changed to the button from mp: more good luck. A little tourney rungoot would be icing on this cake yo, call me greedy…. moar rungoot!

Quick post:

So yeah, I’ve been studying/playing hold em for almost a year now. It’s starting to cause issues for my wife. It really isn’t poker so much as it’s she’s generally unhappy because the way her career is/isn’t going. We had an issue similar to this last October so I spent November/December focusing on cash games (which I basically sux at.) My bankroll got so low, I started playing SNGs again to grind it back up. Cash games are just so much more flexible for the schedule – better for the relationship. Anyway, I received a pretty big bonus at work and was able to make a deposit. I need to be focusing on cash games again – it just feels so good to win again :). I’m taking a couple of days off from work this week. The plan is to play some tourneys those days and start to focus on cash games again this weekend. Plan – execute – got it :) – HD

I first began playing poker seriously in 2007 by playing a few local NL tournaments and in 2008 I began playing on-line at PokerStars. At first I stuck to a “tight is right” policy which I guess is an OK strategy for the absolute beginner, after all it keeps you out of trouble most of the time, but I quickly found that tight is right is also another name for predictable and exploitable. I’ve read several book on Poker including small stakes hold‘em and Collin Moshman’s Sit’n’Go strategy and many others. I mention these two, because I feel they are the best book I’ve read so far, After reading these books I’ve found my understanding of the game has become much deeper, but I still find that I am still an over all looser. I finally discovered DeucesCracked a few months ago and have taken my game to the next level thanks to guys like Entity, Deathdonky, and Pygmy hero, but I am still not there yet (I have a tendency to spew in attempt to maintain an aggressive game). The purpose of this blog is to improve my game and hopefully meet guys/gals that love poker as much as I do. Also I am in the Navy will soon be retiring to civilian life after 20 something years and frankly the thought of landing and holding down another full time job makes me queasy, so I definitely want to improve my game to winning status so that I can supplement my pension with poker money and hopefully have enough left over to buy my way in to a few big tournaments a year. In my real life I don’t know anybody other then my father who appreciates poker the way I do. My favorite games are limit hold’em and single table SNGs. I eventually want to transition to NL cash and other forms such as Omaha and Horse events. Well in a nut shell that is pretty much me. I look forward to interacting with everybody in the forums.

As part of my March Goals I’ve been re-listening to Eightfold Path to Poker Enlightenment and to be honest something I figured out is that very little makes me more content than listening to well played music, especailly classical music (Rock gets a Pass here as it’s pretty much the only from of modern music that can be adapted to be played with a full orchestra such as This Example )

Probably why I like Guitar Hero too

But anyway classical music is something I like relaxing too as, fate would have it, I do have a piano background. I got so far on natural talent and then sadly with my time massively limited I had to make a choice between all the sport I was playing (I was literally playing 7 days a week, be it Football, Rugby, Winter Cricket Nets etc) and continuing on the piano, which I would have had to sink more time into, and I made my choice and to be honest, I don’t regret the choice, I only regret the consequences. I still played occasional simple songs like Christmas Carols but never got to being able to play things like the Fur Elise.

So listening to Episode 4 of EPTPE I was listening to the reciprocalized (is that a word???) versions of certain classics enjoying what Tommy was coming up with and then the episode concluded with an amazing rendition of Heart and Soul. If you haven’t heard it go to Tommy’s site and download it because, for me, it’s so uplifting to listen to and just instantly makes me feel better. Anyone who has a gift for playing an instrument/singing or something simlar truly does have a wonderful gift in my eyes. Thanks Tommy.

As for a poker update I’m just working away at 2/4 at the moment while engaging in 3 hour chats about a single situation…ethorn I’m gonna KILL you for bringing that hand up :) Ooops guess EPTPE hasn’t quite worked yet…MORE LISTENING :)

Why I'm happy about bad plays sometimes

I probably made one of the worst poker plays yesterday when I called off an all-in 3-bet on the river with the high straight on a paired board. So why am I so happy about it? Because after the hand was over I knew it was bad. I was able to look over the hand and come up with a much better line. I posted it on the DC forums here:

I feel like I’m playing with much more awareness than I used to. I need to work on taking my time at the tables. I snapped called this, but in the future will work towards taking my time on big decisions. I know now that I can definitely raise/fold certain rivers and feel pretty comfortable about doing so.

Despite that hand and getting all in KK vs. 77 on a 762s board for 100BBs, I still managed to end the 905 hand session up (+61.22, 13.53BB/100). Was fortunate to get cards against some really big fish, so that helped!

As mentioned, Karen and I went climbing on Sunday and it went really well. The new shoes worked out great and the harnesses were much more comfortable than the rentals. We were able to climb 2 5.8s together and I was able to get a third 5.8, although I took so long that the gym closed before Karen had enough time to tackle it thoroughly. I think she’ll get it next time.

Algebra exam was okay. There was actually a very tricky T/F section at the beginning. The proofs were a piece of cake. On one question where we had to prove that Z[\sqrt{3}i] was not a Unique Factorization Domain, I used the fact that 4 could be factored into irreducible elements (2)(2) and (1-\sqrt{-3})(1+\sqrt{-3}). To show irreducibility I used that the norm of a complex number is 1 if and only if the number is 1,-1,i,-i, and that 1,-1 are the only elements that are in the domain under consideration. Since N(a)=4 (where a is a factor of 4), if a factors in Z[\sqrt{-3}] it would have 2 factors of norm 2 (not possible) or a factor of norm 4 and 1, hence one factor would be a unit. This is a fairly standard proof I think, but I neglected to mention that N(b)=1 implies b is a unit by property of the norm function over the complex numbers. The ambiguity could lead the grader to thinking that i was using N as a euclidean norm, which was not my intent. We’ll just see how he grades it.

Well, I haven’t posted in a while. Sorry.

Been very busy with work as I’m finishing up on Friday, really can’t wait to get out of here and start playing full time.

Results have been good the lsat month or so and am going in to next week very positive about my game. I am looking forward to playing 3k hands a day. Think I am going to play 3 2 hour sessions and take decent breaks in between. That should be less intensive and would easlily allow me to play 15k a week and 60k a month.

Still playing 100nl now but mix in the £ and euro tables so the winrates is quite high and think I can put in some decent months and get up to 200nl very soon. By May for sure.

I’ll keep this updated now on a more regular basis and will post graphs and maybe hands. I’ll try and keep it brief and interesting.
